RAND ROCK Obituary

RAND ROCK Richard Rand Rock II, beloved husband of Katy and father of Zach (15), Jimmy (11), and Parker (9), died peacefully in the arms of his family Feb. 6, 2013, at Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas, after a three-year battle with cancer. A man with great integrity, fierce love and sense of duty and a legendary sense of humor, Rand will be greatly missed. In addition to his wife and children, Rand is survived by his parents, Richard and Rosalee Rock of Tulsa, Okla. his siblings, Darci, Devon and Regan Rock of Austin, Texas, Tulsa, and Arkansas City, Kan., respectively; and by many nieces and nephews, whom he loved. Rand's career was dedicated to every aspect of law, community and country beginning with his service in Vietnam with the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment (1969-1972), through his practice of law in Kansas and Missouri, and service in the Kansas State Legislature (1990-1994) and, finally, during the 33 proud years he spent in law enforcement beginning as a police officer in the Lawrence Police Department (1973-1980), also serving eight years as U.S. Marshal for the District of Kansas (1994-2002), and most recently as chemical security inspector for the Department of Homeland Security. Although Rand was proud of the many awards, citations, medals and honors he received over his career, he considered his greatest life achievement to be his family, and the greatest honor he received was the respect and affection of his fellow officers of the law and protectors of the peace. Rand's Nevada memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at Faith Community Lutheran Church, 2700 S. Town Center Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89135. I recently learned of and was saddened by the news of Rand's passing. Rand and I had many KU undergrad classes together in the late 70's and became friends throughout his Kansas law enforcement career. I will always remember his infectious smile. Rand was a great friend and mentor.

Dick, Rosalie, and Darci,

Julie and I are so sorry to hear of the passing of Rand. Having gone to school with Darci, having know Dick and Rosalie around the Capitol, and then getting to know Rand through the Capitol but also through our friendship, we have been blessed to be involved with your entire family. We are sorry to learn of the battle which Rand had, and we can only remember him as a strong, kind, considerate, hard-working, and capable friend. We will miss him. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

I wish that I could say that I was his only friend but that would be a lie. He could find a friend anywhere he looked or wherever he went. Once he was your friend he never forgot you & always took time for you. He was a person that always looked after his friends first. The Rock family always treated me as a good friend & welcomed me in their home. I will miss Rand's laughter & his funny stories. He made the world a better place to live & will be missed

As one who grew up with Rand beginning in Sunday School/Central Christian Church, through our high school class of '67 - it is a great loss. Memory glimpses of high school - always - Rand's face at the forefront-as he was one that always reached out to all classmates - with his "chill" ,easy-going and extremely friendly attitude - making everyone feel they belonged. Thank you, Rand, for those memories of my '50's and "60's. God Bless to his family.

I have known Rand since he was with the Lawrence Police Department and I was the Lawrence City Prosecutor. Later, I would see Rand when I was in private criminal defense practice in Federal Court. We were all hoping that someday he would retire back to Lake Wabaunsee, Kansas, so we could see him more often. I stumbled across the notice in the Topeka paper and was shocked. Rand, to me, seemed bullit proof and indestructible. A reminder that we are all just hanging by a thread. He was a one of a kind and will be hugely missed. My prayers to his family.

Many very fond memories of Rand having grown up together in Arkansas City. He was my Little Brother in the Fraternity at Oklahoma State University. We were together again during our Lawrence, Kansas days. He will be dearly missed by all
