STEPHEN GOLD Obituary

STEPHEN GOLD Noted broadcast executive and long-time Las Vegan Stephen Gold, passed away Feb. 11, 2014, surrounded by loved ones. Born in 1944, Stephen moved with his family to Las Vegas when he was 17 as a result of his father, Mike Gold, purchasing KLUC radio station. It was while working here that Stephen first made his impact on the southern Nevada airwaves with the innovative, "Three in a Row" format, which revolutionized radio and rocketed the station to success. Steve's next endeavor was to create Broadcast Associates, a partnership that eventually owned and operated five radio stations throughout the southwest. Local stations included the all-news KBMI and sister country stations KFM 102 and KVEG. "Steve made an incredible contribution to, and was highly respected throughout, the broadcast industry. Aside from being a true genius in his field, Steve was one of the nicest, most compassionate people I've ever had the pleasure to know," said former partner and long-time friend, Hank Thornley. Stephen is survived by his wife, Catherine May Gold, whom he married in 1976 at the Stardust Hotel; daughter, Stephanie Gold; and son, Stephen Terry Gold, all of Las Vegas. Other surviving family members include his brother, Richard Gold; sister, Marjorie Gold Lifson and her husband, Marshall; nephews, Carey Lifson and his wife, Dara, and David Lifson and his wife Alexandra; niece, Amy Newman and her husband, Barry; great-nephew, Daniel Lifson; great-nieces, Allisa and Paige Newman; and cousins, Rochelle Hoffman and Alan Weisman. Stephen is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Mary, Tammy, Denise and Angela Zubick, a special thank you to Angela for her loving care; brother-in-law, Ray May; as well as nieces and nephews, David, Michael, Helene, Irving, Madeline, Nicole, Brandon and Hayley. At the express request of the deceased, there will be no public services.

To all of Steve's family...it was with great sadness I read of Steve's passing. He was a true trendsetter and so many years ago he helped my now ex-husband create his ad biz...thank you Steve... and to the family my sincerest condolences.

Steve led the way in an era where local radio was a family, and you knew everyone. And being the top decision maker, he did what was best for his people and his radio stations, a feeling lost and very much missed in today's corporate run local media world where carving away for the bottom line is the only thing that matters. Rest In Peace Steve. You will be missed.

A wonderful man who will be truly missed. Steve I treasured your deliciously dry wit, head for business, and a soft heart. Though friends for more than 40 years, I don't think I ever saw you happier than when (accessorized with full beard and a walking stick) you'd stroll the beaches of Puerto Vallarta surrounded by your dogs. Thanks to you, I met Cathy, something for which I'll always be grateful. Love you Steve, be at peace.
