Arthur Adams Obituary

Arthur Stanford Adams
May 20, 1935 - August 14, 2021
Macon, Georgia - Arthur Stanford Adams, 86, passed away on Saturday, August 14, 2021. A Memorial Service will be held at Snow's Memorial Chapel, Bass Road, Macon, on Thursday, August 19, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. The family will greet friends immediately following the service and requests that attendees wear masks and observe social distancing. Burial will be private.
Stan was born in Thomaston, Georgia to Arthur Paul and Hazel Hickmon Adams. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sandra, and children; Paula Adams Shaw (Curt), John Stanford Adams (Robynne ) and Charlotte Adams; grandchildren; Larkin Shaw Jones (Andrew), Andrew Shaw (Stacey), and Jack Adams; and great-grandchildren; Beatty Jones, Lottie Jones, Emersyn Shaw, and another Baby Shaw due in November.
Stan was preceded in death by his parents and great-grandson, Matthew Shaw.
Stan graduated from R.E. Lee High School Thomaston, Georgia and attended Georgia Tech, graduating in 1957 with a B.S. in Architecture. After serving in the Army Signal Corp, he returned to Georgia Tech and earned a B.A. in Architecture in 1961. Stan remained in the Army Reserve until 1965, reaching the rank of captain.
Stan and Sandra moved to Macon in 1961 where he had accepted a position with William P. Thompson, Architects, thus beginning his 53-year career as an architect. While working for the Thompson firm, Stan worked on the design for the Macon Coliseum.
In 1965 he opened his own architectural firm and, during his career, was proud of the fact that he served the same clients for many years. He designed many of the school buildings in Peach, Monroe, Jasper, and Telfair counties, as well as Dublin city schools. In Bibb County, Stan was the architect for the Macon-Bibb headquarters fire station, numerous banks, and the former Hutchings Career Center building. He also designed the headquarters fire station in Athens. Stan was instrumental in the design build and site work for the Fort Hawkins Commission of the Visitors Center. Stan retired in 2014, leaving the Adams and Day firm in good hands with long-time partner, Bob Day.
Stan was an amateur radio operator since age 16 and belonged to the Macon Amateur Radio Club for many years. Using his call sign of W4VZY, he enjoyed making contact with other hams around the world and talking to his childhood friend Charlie Walker in Australia.
Stan enjoyed traveling in the U.S. and abroad. One of his and Sandra's favorite trips was traveling for five weeks across the western states. He and Sandra spent many happy hours visiting cemeteries and courthouses, researching family genealogy throughout the United States.
Stan was a member of Vineville Baptist Church, the Ocmulgee Chapter Sons of the American Revolution, and also the Vine-Ingle Lions Club during its existence.
Memorial gifts may be made to Vineville Baptist Church or The Methodist Home for Children.

My deepest sympathies to the Sandra, Paula, John and Charlotte. Mr. Adams was one of the first fathers that I came into frequent contact with as I grew up from age 7 through my early 20s. Mr. Adams was smart, witty, funny and congenial. I appreciate the smart advice that he gave me over the years. I have peace because I know that Mr. Adams is home now with his Lord and Savior. Rest in peace!
