Centerville, GA- On Saturday, December 3, 2016, Dr. Dan Callahan passed away peacefully at the inpatient unit of Heart of Georgia Hospice in Perry. Born in 1923, Dr. Callahan was the son of the late Frank and Jewell Cochran Callahan. A native Georgian, he graduated from Taylor County High School, and then Emory University and The Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Callahan practiced family medicine for over five decades in Georgia and was one of the earliest doctors to practice in Warner Robins, caring for generations of Houston County families.
A veteran of the United States Army, Dr. Callahan served in the Army Medical Department during World War II and the Philippine Liberation Campaign. Later, he would again serve his country volunteering as a physician during the Vietnam Conflict. For his service during Vietnam, he was awarded citations from the U.S. State Department, the Republic of Vietnam, and the American Medical Association. Many honors were bestowed upon Dr. Callahan over his lifetime, notably these include being a recipient of the Exceptional Service Medal awarded by the U. S. Air Force, being named the Jimmy Doolittle Fellow by the Aerospace Education Foundation, and also the Warner Robins – ALC Citizen of The Year in 1991, and being inducted as a Life Member of the Reserve Officer's Association. Actively involved for many years in the Air Force Association, he held the position of Southeast Regional Vice President and was also the association's National Director Emeritus. Dr. Callahan will be remembered as a true ambassador for the city of Warner Robins and the myriad of causes near and dear to him. He gave freely of his time, talent, and resources for the betterment of his community and those causes he sought to further. A staunch supporter of Robins Air Force Base and the United States Armed Forces, he is credited with coining the acronym EDIUSAIAFAD – Every Day In USA Is Armed Forces Appreciation Day. He sat on the board of directors of many organizations, including the Museum of Aviation, the Houston County/Middle Georgia Red Cross, the Warner Robins Area Chamber of Commerce, as well as the Houston County Association for Exceptional Citizens –the last being an organization of which he was a founder. He was a member, investor, and active participant in the Greenland Expedition Society for which he served as the flight surgeon. Additionally, Dr. Callahan was a member of the Rotary Club for almost sixty years and a lifelong supporter of the Boy Scouts of America. He was a longtime devoted member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church who also enjoyed time attending the Church of Latter Day Saints with his wife, Alicia, who is a member there.
To carry on his legacy, Dr. Callahan leaves behind his loving wife, Alicia Callahan; three sons, William Callahan; Daniel Callahan and his wife, Cheryl; Christopher Callahan and his wife, Katie; three step-sons, David Causey; Christopher Causey and wife, Kim; Charles Causey and wife, Cynthia; a brother, Roy Callahan, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

I was fortunate to have work with Dr. Callahan as we served as members of the Robins Air Force Base Environmental Advisory Board over the years. He was such a wonderful man, kind, considerate and self-deprecating. My life has been enriched simply through the fleeting interactions that we shared during our quarterly meetings. You made a difference sir and you will be missed.

Dr. Callahan will be remembered as a pioneer of our great city, Warner Robins. Along with Dr. Outler, Dr. Ivey and my father, Dr. Meserve, they practiced medicine in "Dog Patch" as they called it. They built the hospital and truly believed in the miracle of medicine. Dr. Dan's legacy will live on. May the many wonderful memories comfort his friends and family.

Dear Callahan family, I am so sorry for your loss. Dr. Callahan will be missed by many. He wasn't my family doctor, but everybody in Warner Robins knew of the doctor. I grew in Warner Robins 1952 until 1965. May God comfort you and bless you during this hard time. Rest In Peace Dr. Callahan.

Dr. Dan was a selfless and giving person in all aspects of his life. I had the pleasure of knowing him for the past 42 years and working with him on many professional and community boards. His quiet discipleship of helping others, his community and his country are without equal. His contributions will be felt in this community for many generations. I am a better person and my community is better for having known Dr. Callahan. May he rest in peace in God's Grace. Respectfully, Dr. Steve & Robin Holcomb & Family.

I had the opportunity (and privilege) of working with Dr Callahan as part of our HOA board of directors. He was always willing to contribute his time and labor to help others, often at his personal expense. Our area will miss him greatly, but his contributions to make this a better place to live will long be remembered.

My life is much richer having cross paths with Dr.Dan. He was my doctor and I served with him on the Red Cross Board and at the Museum of Aviation. He was a true patriot. Grace & Peace to the family.
