Beth, Jenny, Steve, & Burt,
I received the news about your father while I was in Arkansas.
I am sorry that I was not here to attend the funeral. I have some special memories of times spent in your home and at Indian Springs when Beth and I were childhood friends.(and a funny story of my ride from Indian Springs back to Fort Valley with Mr Joe). I also am grateful to your father for the time he provided a bus for "Daybreak" when I was touring with them. Our bus broke down in south Georgia, and he came to our rescue. He was such a compassionate man of God.
I always enjoyed seeing his smiling face at Indian Springs the summers that I drove over there to visit friends. I pray the Lord will comfort you as only He can.
In Christ's Love,
Donna Eubanks Dunnam

Dear Beth, Jenny, Steve and Burt,
My prayers and thoughts are with you and your families during your time of loss. We are thinking of you as you celebrate Joe's life. It was a rare privilege to have been exposed to such a great man as a young person. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

December 25, 2006

My knowledge of the Luce family dates back to my father's (A.M. Rearick) service on the C.E.I./ Vennard board of trustees , serving with Joe's father. In recent years I had the priviledge of personally knowing Joe during his brief time on the board. God has wonderfully used his commitment and service throughout his lifetime and earth's loss is definitely heaven's gain. May God comfort you in your loss.

December 22, 2006

I don't know that I ever met Joe Luce, but I knew him through Beth who roomed with Lydia Mayo Allshouse, my sister. I heard MANY good things about how God was using him through conversations with my parents (Rev. and Mrs. William Mayo) and my siblings (Lydia, Debbie Hawk and Jon Mayo). I know that Christmas will be SO hard. I pray that God will be VERY NEAR to you all. "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My Righteous right hand." Isaiah 41:10

I met Mr. Joe as a young school bus salesman. He will always be remembered as a great man who did many great things. He touched so many people in so many ways and for this he will be greatly missed. The thing that comes to mind most vividly is that he always took the time to help others no matter how busy he was.

Mary Jim,
Although I did not have the opportunity to really know Joe, I do know that the obituary cannot in anyway convey the extent of his influence and benevelonce to so many causes. Dr. Ernie and Sue Steury,my sister and brother-in-law,were beneficiaries of so much of his love and generosity. Thus I have come to feel I did know him.
Many thoughts and prayers are with you.

December 21, 2006

Dear Beth, Jenny, Steve, Burt and families,
Our hearts broke for you when we heard about Joe's death. Joe was present when Bill and I were appointed by the WGM Board as missionaries to Mexico.
But even before, your family was special to me because of your gracious hospitality and friendship when we were at Asbury. Your parents taught me a new level of Southern hospitality but, above and beyond that, the love of Jesus that shone through them to everyone they met made an impact on me.
The verse that came to me is II Timothy 4:7, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." This verse truly exemplifies the life your dad lived. We will miss him.

December 20, 2006

Norene and I would like to express to the Luce family that they are in our thoughts and prayers. It was my privilege to get to know Joe Luce when I worked in Field Ministries at WGM. I appreciated his interest in the appointment of new missionaries and his evaluation of their potential for missionary service. We know the words of Scripture are true, "precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints," yet there is still the loss and emptiness that comes with his homegoing. May you sense in a special way, the nearness of the Christ child.

I think I can speak for all the ex Wanderlodge dealers when I say that doing business with the Luce family was an honor. We knew that when a Luce told us something - we could put it in the bank. Those were good people making a good product. Mr. Joe was one of the best.

My father, Rev. J. Clinton M. Ward, pastor of Byron, Ga. Methodist Church loved the Luce family from 1936 until dad died in l976. Because of Dad's love for the luce family I've kept up with them. Joe and all the Luce family have been marvelous human beings.

David Stevens

December 20, 2006

I still chuckle when I remember Joe saying to me, “I didn’t think there was any way you all could you do this but you seemed so earnest and determined, I thought I would at least give you a chance.” He said that as we walked across the top of the dam of the hydroelectric plant at Tenwek just before its dedication. The Rainbow Fund had had made a “reckless” gift, he first $20,000 that got the ball rolling on this $800,000 project in the mid-eighties. It was the funds that got the engineers to Kenya to do the feasibility study, helped get a road built down to the falls and much more. It was the seed of faith that revolutionized the quality of healthcare at Tenwek hospital, inspired other foundations to give and gave us the savings in fuel cost to start the nursing school.

When I think of Joe, I remember a man of vision who was always looking for strategic opportunities to invest where he would get high dividends for God’s kingdom. Tens of thousands greeted him in heaven because of his passion to carry out the Great Commission around the world and many more will join him in the years ahead because he gave, he went and he prayed. What a legacy! What a life! What a testimony and inspiration to us all!

Joe & Marilyn have always been very special to me. My first experience on a trampoline was at their home, playing with Beth & Jenny. Joe & Marilyn's gracious and loving hospitality and generous care were just one more expression of their gratitude to the Lord, love for His people, and commitment to His work throughout the world.
In the Bible Joe gave me a few years ago, he wrote his life verse, Proverbs 3:5 & 6:"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths."

Mary Jim, Burt, Steve, Beth, Jenny, Buddy and Family,
We just received word about Papa Joes passing. We cannot express how much he meant to our family. He was such a humble, generous and loving soul. He was the first person to hold our baby girl in the hospital after she was born. He made us feel like our family was his family too. He truly had a heart for people. He had a way of making you feel so special. He never forgot a name or detail about anyone he met. He had a great sense of humor and could always get a smile out of you. He had a way of being that just made you feel like everything was going to be ok. He loved his family and was so proud of his grandkids and each of their accomplishments. Every time we saw him he would speak of them with such pride and adoration. If I had to describe Joe in one word it would be 'LOVE'. He loved his family, he loved people and he loved Christ. I am filled with sorrow at his passing, but at the same time I am joyful because he is home with the Lord and I know he is happy. Our deepest condolences to you Mary Jim and all his family.

I thank God for Joe's life. I always found him to be both approachable and full of love and passion for our Lord. His impact on my ministry with World Gospel Mission, and through his support of Wesley Biblical Seminary will never be forgotten. When I was undecided about where to teach theology, and hurting about maybe having to leave Honduras, he encouraged me to teach at the Bolivian Evangelical University. I am now in Bolivia, and am very thankful that God used Joe to help me in a time I needed guidance to decide between two very good choices.

I miss him already, and I know you always will, but I'm thankful for the testimony of a life of integrity lived with consistency as a servant of others, but most importantly, a servant of God.
God bless you,

Dearest Luce family, Mr. Joe was a wonderful 'down-to-earth'/ walk the talk man of God (& what a memory he had!) I was so blessed in 1985 to have been one of his team members on a mission trip to Honduras. What memories I hold dear(awesome - how GOD has used your dad for His Kingdom work).
I am lifting your names Heavenward. Be comforted knowing that he's heard the words I so long to hear someday.... "well done, thy good & faithful servant".

As friends we sorrow, but not like those with no hope, as we know where Joe is now, with His Lord. As believers we know Joe's homegoing is precious in the sight of our wonderful Lord. Joe touched the lives of many, including our extended family through the Rainbow Fund, WGM support, CMDA support and the vision for the Mobile Medical Unit (Wonderlodge) that has been serving the poor in Honduras the last 7 years, and now headed for Nicaragua. This ministry alone has seen thousands come to faith in Christ. Our love, thoughts and prayers are with you children, Steve, Burt, Beth, Jenny and your extended families and to Mary Jim.

I came to Fort Valley in the summer of 1966; a young 19 year old full of visions and ambition as a draftsman for Blue Bird.
My boarding house arrangements led me to many christian experiences in Fort Valley,as well as the opportunity to feel the power of Christ at Indian Springs.
The fact that company owners (Mr Joe and Buddy)would speak and take time for a "youngster" like me, spoke volumns, and I even became friends with Mr Buddy's daughter, Marilyn.
My time at Blue Bird was interrupted by service in the Air Force, but that summer remains a valuable part from my youth.
Mr Joe, and the entire Luce family are still in my heart, and once more, my prayers.

Dear Family of Joe Luce,

What this man, your father, and your family have meant to these two missionaries for 46 years, is awesome. Steve, Bert, Beth, and Jenny, the lives of your father and mother touched the depths of our soul. Your grandparents, Albert and Helen Luce, started it all. Your father followed in their footsteps. We shall never forget the night we sat in the den in Fort Valley, GA, watching the Moon Launch with your father, and heard the first man utter his first words from the Moon! Your Dad, which was so characteristic of him, lifted his hand in praise to God over the success of the mission. He saw success all around him in the lives of those he helped. Mary Jim, Albert and Betty, we love you too. You have been a big part of our lives. As we continue to serve in the capacity of missionaries to Hispanics in the USA, we feel all of you have made a contribution to our lives. We could not have been serving so long without your compassion and love. Thank you.

Those who knew Joe and the Luce family know where their heart is. They also know that we will meet again and look forward to that day. It is the latter conviction, and faith, that inspires us to remain steadfast daily in "fighting the good fight" while it illumines the pathway to the doorsteps of Heaven. Joe set a marvelous example and for that we are grateful and blessed.

We pray that the certain knowledge of eternal life and of God's infinite love will enfold you during this time of bereavement.

Dear Beth, Jennifer, Steve and Burt,

My prayers and thoughts are with you and your families during your time of loss. Carl informed me of your father's passing into eternity on Sunday.

I rejoice with you over his meaningful life on earth and the joy he must now be experiencing in the presence of his Saviour.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Luce family. Through his example as a Christian businessman he impacted millions of people around the world. He was truly a man of God, living his destiny. I feel honored to have been able to know the Luce family and to experience first hand the way business should operate. Thanks. Sincerely, Rick Lehnert

Know that you are prayed for during this time of sadness. Joe Luce was such an inspiration to many and his legacy will live on. We knew him through Indian Springs Holiness Camp Ground - he allowed my husband to hunt on the grounds and to destroy the beaver dams on the lake.

Blessings,
