Gray, GA- Peter George Coon, Sr. passed away on August 21, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. Memorial services will be held Friday, August 24, 2018 at 4:00PM at Ingleside Baptist Church, 834 Wimbish Road, Macon, GA 31210 with Dr. Tim McCoy and Dr. Mark Hudgins officiating. The family will greet friends at Hart's Mortuary, Jones County Chapel, 307 Pecan Lane, Gray, GA 31032 on Thursday, August 23, 2018 from 4:00PM-6:30PM. The family respectfully request donations be made to the Pilot Club of Jones County, Project Lifesaver, P.O. Box 553, Gray, GA 31032 or Ingleside Baptist Church, Mission Fund, 834 Wimbish Road, Macon, GA 31210.
Pete was born in Washington D.C. on April 9, 1943. He was a graduate of Caroline High School in Bowling Green, Virginia. Pete worked in the Insurance Industry for 41 years. Through those years he was an Underwriter for Geico, Underwriter and Manager for American Mutual, Director of Southern Trust, AVP and Underwriter for Insurance America, and an Agent for Georgia Farm Bureau. Pete enlisted in the U.S. Marine CORPS; serving in the Reserve 2nd Marine Division, FMF 13th Infantry Battalion at Washington Navy Yard. He served from June 1964 to May 1970, when he was honorably discharged as Sergeant E-5.
Pete was a member of Ingleside Baptist Church and was a previous member of Forest Hills United Methodist, Vineville Baptist, and Elam Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School Director. Over the years he taught 4-year old's, 8th graders, and adult singles. Pete was a Boy Scout leader for 15 years, serving first as a Webelos Leader; Scout Master of Troop 170, Forest Hills United Methodist; Assistant Scout Master, Troop 787 Charleston, South Carolina; and Assistant Scout Master Troop 485, Gray, Georgia. He joined the Exchange Club of Bibb County in 1978 and maintained a membership in the club until 2009. Pete served as President and Director and was the guiding factor in starting new clubs in Byron, Georgia and Jones County, where he also served as president. He was awarded "Outstanding Exchangite" of the year in 1999.
Pete is preceded in death by his parents, Percival George Coon and Mary Belle Derby Coon.
Pete is survived by his wife of 28 years, Beth Ethridge Coon of Gray, Georgia; 3 sons: Peter George Coon, Jr. of Macon, Joseph Andrew Coon of Macon, and Stephen Morse Coon of Gray; daughter, Rebekah Elizabeth Coon of Gray; granddaughter, Emily Carol Coon of Perry; sister, Elsa Kurtz of Burke, Virginia; and brother, David Jones (Judy) of Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

To Beth and Family, In loving memory of a wonderful friend and fishing buddy. So sorry we will not be able to attend Pete's Memorial Service. He will be with me in the surf at night on the Outer Banks of N.C. Our twice yearly trips to OBX meant to much to each of us. A Mass was said at our church on August 22 at 7:30 a.m. for Pete. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Beth, Peter Jr., Joey, Stephen, Rebekah, Elsa and David.
