Robert Gibson Obituary

Robert Burrows Gibson

January 25, 1943 - February 27, 2026

Blairsville, Georgia - The Reverend Robert Burrows Gibson, beloved priest, spiritual counselor, husband, father, and grandfather, passed peacefully into eternal rest on February 27, 2026, at the age of 83 after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. Born on January 25, 1943, in Rochester, NY, Rev. Gibson felt called to the priesthood at a young age. After graduating from Ohio Wesleyan University, he completed his theological studies at Berkeley Divinity School at Yale and was ordained an Episcopal priest on Palm Sunday in 1969. Rev. Gibson pursued postgraduate studies in Berkeley, CA, before settling in Georgia in 1971, first as chaplain at Woodward Academy in College Park, and then as priest at St. James Episcopal Church in Macon for sixteen years. He furthered his ministry to others by becoming a licensed psychotherapist in the 1980s; spiritual director at Coliseum Psychiatric Hospital for four years; and then chaplain at The Medical Center of Central Georgia where he retired after sixteen years. He was known for ministering throughout his career with compassion, humility, and unwavering dedication. As part of his service to others, he was an Education for Ministry (EFM) mentor for almost thirty years, earning the distinction of being the longest-serving EFM mentor at the time. Known as "Dean Bob," he was an endearing and colorful presence at junior camp sessions at Camp Mikell in Toccoa, GA for many summers. He was active in the Walk to Emmaus community in Macon, at times serving as spiritual director, as well as the Order of St. Luke. Beyond his pastoral duties, Rev. Gibson enjoyed reading, studying history, and watching British mysteries. His love of history led him to become an American Revolutionary War re-enactor with the New Jersey Light Infantry. He found solace in the outdoors as an avid hunter, fisherman, recreational shooter, and golfer. He loved to plan vacations for his family, especially if it involved a battlefield or historical marker. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jay and Louise Gibson of Hornell, NY, and his sister, Carol Rae Bailey of Rochester, NY. He is survived by his wife, Joy Hearn Gibson of Blairsville, GA; daughters Catherine "Katie" Gibson of Blairsville and Meredith Gibson of Annapolis, MD; grandsons, Adam and Gabriel Farruk of Annapolis; and countless nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, friends, and parishioners whose lives he touched. Arrangements for the funeral service at St. Clare's Episcopal Church in Blairsville, GA, are still pending. A reception in the fellowship hall will be held afterward for friends and family to celebrate and remember a well lived life. Please check the Mountain View Funeral Home's website (www.mountainviewfuneralhome.com) for updated information. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Episcopal Relief and Development Fund or Empyrean Hospice in Rev. Gibson's memory. "Well done, good and faithful servant." (Matthew 25:23) Mountain View Funeral Home of Blairsville is in charge of the arrangements. You may sign the family guest book and send condolences online at www.mountainviewfuneralhome.com

Offering our deepest condolences during this difficult time.

Yesterday

Bob was my EFM mentor for four years, and he lived in Macon (my home town) for many years, so I had many opportunities to get to know Bob in various groups. Bob was simply a great guy - solid - fun - kind and helpful - reliable - just the kind of person you liked to be around. He (and his puns) will be sorely missed! My love and sympathy to Joy and all his family - May God send you peace and comfort in the times to come.

My heartfelt prayers for comfort and peace are with Bob's family and close friends. It was truly a blessing to have known him for even a few short months. In Christ, we have a blessed hope of seeing him again, in a Land where there is no sickness, nor sorrow.

Father Bob was always smiling and always there when he was needed when he was a Chaplain at the Med. He was with my family when my Mother died. He was loved by the staff and patient alike.
RIP, Fr Bob!

Many people in Macon, GA are thinking about and praying for you Joy and Family. Father Bob was such a sweet soul and always had a smile for you. He was loved by so many people at MCCG/Atrium Health, both patients and hospital staff. I treasure the memories of a weekend I and friends spent with you and Bob, sitting on your porch looking at those beautiful mountains. It was a heavenly scene. Please know you will be in my thoughts and prayers. Hilda Hilliard

Father Bob was always a bright light when I worked with him in Macon. He came and prayed (and told several jokes) with me on several occasions, including when I was in labor with my sons. I know that we hadn’t kept in touch well, but I’ll never forget having dinner together after I moved to Blairsville. Joy, your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Joy you and the family are in my thoughts and prayers. Father Bob was so special. He was with me during one of my darkest hours. He was a ray of sunshine and I loved his daily jokes! There is no doubt where he now resides! RIP Father Bob

Precious Bob is all healed now, but he is leaving a bunch of people saddened by his absence from our presence. I dearly loved him. Peace and comfort to all the actual family, and to our St. Clare's family. He is missed already.

Bob Gibson was my cousin and I will miss him dearly. He had a wicked sense of humor, was honest and open, and someone I could talk to about times gone by because we shared some of those times. I will miss answering the phone and hearing "Hi Cuz"! Rest in peace Bob. We are all comforted that you are no longer in pain. I love you!

I'm so saddened by Bob's passing. But at the same time, I'm gladdened to know that he is once again whole. I will miss him greatly - he's been one of my favorite people since moving to St Clare's in 2012. I send my love and prayers for peace to the whole family.

Father Bob was the coolest Priest ever. He would come into the NNICU and tell me he was doing a “drive by” and would stop and tell a joke. What was amazing about Father Bob after he met you he could remember your name. My Dad probably met you at your entrance into Heaven. He considered you a good friend Rest well Father Bob ❤

Bob was such Dean! His sense of humor, encouraging a Clown Ministry to visit members and spread love and laughter. Allowing us to deliver a "quiet" service on fifth Sundays. He will be missed. Love and peace to his family. He was LOVED.
