Steven Nicholas Baumgartner, age 71, of Blairsville, Georgia passed away on February 25, 2026 peacefully at his home. Steve Baumgartner was born December 15, 1954 in Escondido, California to the late Nicholas Stephen Baumgartner and the late Janice Rae Baumgartner.
Steve moved from Charleston, SC to the mountains of Murphy, NC after retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force after 27 years of service. He then moved lakeside to Blairsville which has been his home for the past 7 years.
He is remembered for his life of service & dedication to his country, family, friends, and community.
Steve was a U.S. Air Force Academy graduate, veteran, and pilot with stick time in over 15 aircraft, a North Carolina Certified Firefighter & Instructor for 22 years, Assistant Fire Marshal, Fire Inspector, and Building Inspector in Cherokee County.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Janice Baumgartner and sister, Susan Lynn Workman.
Survivors include his sons Scott and Brian, daughters Layne and Gwen, and 4 grandchildren: Alexander, Anna, Harper, and Rowan.
He is buried at Greenlawn Cemetery in Murphy, NC next to his father, mother, and sister.
