Seaborn Jones Obituary
October 10, 1942 - October 3, 2014
Lizella, GA- Seaborn Gustavus Jones, 71, of 6421 Columbus Road, died Friday, October 3, 2014. Funeral services will be at 2:00PM on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at Hart's at the Cupola. The family will greet friends following the service.
Mr. Jones was born in and lived most of his life in Macon. He was educated in Macon public schools and attended Mercer University. A veteran of the United States Marines, he was Lighting and Technical Director for the Mr. Rogers Show, a certified zookeeper, and a teacher of poetry in Macon and San Francisco. Seaborn Jones published books of poetry, which include Drowning From the Inside Out, Lost Keys, X-Ray Movies, Black Champagne, Getaway Car in Reverse, and his most recent book, Going Farther into the Woods than the Woods Go, published in 2012, was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in poetry. Honors include the Georgia Author of the Year Award in poetry, the Violet Reed Haas Poetry Award, and selection as a Broadleaf Scholar.
Survivors include his daughter: Bronwyn Jones Fussell, son-in-law: Scott Fussell, granddaughters: Raeder Fussell and Denny Fussell, brother: Victor R. Jones, all of Macon, and sister: Anne M. Lingg of Lakeland, Florida.
In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to Save A Pet, Inc., P. O. Box 933, Forsyth, Georgia 31029.

seaborn was just 'Seaborn'-------his whole life was about seeking out new experiences-------he hid much of his curiosity within his poems-----to me he was a little brother----i thought often through the years that he had early on surrounded himself with my very 'intelligent' friends who influenced us both to think differently about much of life's purpose--------great beginnings & friendship

Seaborn held a very special place in Jim Irvine's heart (my ex-husband). They called each other "My Huckleberry Friend." Seaborn was an inspiration to Jim. We named our only child after him, Seaborne Irvine on June 6, 1972. I remember him for his rare wit and for being a Southern Gentleman. He was always kind and gracious to me. I'm sure Jim would have written something witty if he was still here. Farewell, Huckleberry Friend. You left an indelible mark in many lives.

I only just heard of Seaborn's passing, and was shocked. I thought he would out live us all. I have Xray movies on my night table right now, and read from it often. Bronwyn, I'm sorry.

I remember him well from visits to the Macon museum. It wasn't until our third (or so) trip that I realized he wrote poetry - and GOOD poetry! He reminded me of Chaucer's Oxford student: "gladly would he learn, and gladly teach." He always eager to share with and kind to the little ones.

I am so sorry to hear of Seaborn's passing. Although I have not seen Seaborn in many years I have many great memories of him from our old Lanier High School days. Seaborn was a very talented man with a big heart.

I will truly miss Seaborn. He called me his fellow poet and that is a high honor I can't really live up to. I have his tapes to remember his voice and his books to remind me of his heart. We have lost a great poet.

We will miss you Seaborn. Thank you for your love and talent and for inspiring me. As a 17 year old kid I dreamed of recording your poetry so that it would be preserved forever--not only the amazing composition but the way you read your art.
