George Hicks Sperry, 86, of Wilmington, NC, passed away peacefully March 17, 2026, surrounded by his wife and all his children at Novant New Hanover Regional Medical Center. There will be no memorial service at his request.
He is survived by his wife, Cameron Sperry, and his four children: Louise Marie Sperry, George Hicks Sperry, Jr., Dorothy Ann Sperry, and Jay Kelly Sperry. He was loved dearly by his family and will be sorely missed.
Mr. Sperry was born November 16, 1939, in
Macon, GA, to Robert Faxton Sperry and Rose Marie Lawson Sperry. He was predeceased by one brother, Robert F. Sperry, Jr. He grew up mostly in
Albany, GA, where he graduated from Albany High School in 1957 and attended Mercer University before enlisting in the Army in 1960. While serving in the 101st Airborne, he was selected for the Special Forces Group 7, as part of Operation White Star with the 82nd Airborne Green Berets stationed at
Fort Bragg, NC. He served two combat tours of duty in
Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos and was honorably discharged in 1963.
While serving, he married Linda Hancock of Wilmington, NC, in 1962 and had three children during that marriage: Louise Marie Sperry, George Hicks Sperry, Jr., and Dorothy Ann Sperry.
He attended Wilmington College and later the University of North Carolina School of Law where he graduated in 1968 and became a respected member of the North Carolina State Bar Association. He practiced law in Wilmington, NC, for over 30 years until retirement.
He divorced and later was married to Joan Swart in 1977 and had a son, Jay Kelly Sperry. He divorced and later married Cameron McNamee in 1985, to whom he has been happily married for more than 40 years.
He was a strong righteous defender of his country, his family and friends, and anyone who was in need. He carried himself with respect and dignity and was respectful of others. He was honest to a fault and direct in his speech and actions. He was a fierce advocate for his clients, a loving husband and father, and considered by many to be a dear friend. They don't make men like him anymore and the world is a lesser place without him. He will be loved eternally and, again, sorely missed.
