Michael David Cook, known to family and friends as Mike or "Gampa", of Wilmington, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loved ones on March 12, 2026, at the age of 68.
Born in
Jacksonville, North Carolina, on November 29, 1957, Mike lived a life centered around family, friendship, and hard work. In his early years, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy. Following his service, Mike spent many years as a route salesman with Coca-Cola, where he became a familiar and friendly face to many and formed long-lasting friendships along the way before eventually retiring.
Mike was a devoted husband to his wife of 46 years, Susan Leigh Cook. Together they built a life full of love and light.
He was a proud and loving father to his daughters, Lisa Cook Kinney (Greg) of Burgaw, North Carolina, and Jennifer Lynn Carter of Wilmington, North Carolina.
Mike was also a beloved son to his mother, Mary Lou Cook of Saint Augustine, Florida, and a cherished brother to Donna Alexander of San Marcos, California; Richard Cook of Spokane Valley, Washington; and Kenneth Cook of Saint Augustine, Florida.
He found great joy in spending time with his family, especially his daughters and grandchildren. Mike is lovingly remembered as "Gampa" by his grandchildren: Lauren Leigh LaVance (Cameron), Griffin Kinney, Joey Horrell, Kailey Haley (Braxton), and Wyatt Newman. In his final days, Mike was blessed with the presence of his great-granddaughters, Catherine Leigh LaVance and Arlie Elizabeth Haley.
Mike also had a lifelong love for motorcycles and enjoyed the freedom of the open road. He will be remembered for his kindness, his sense of humor, and the many friendships he formed throughout his life.
His favorite uncle, J. Lloyd Wright, remained faithfully by his side until the very end, along with special bonus grandson Matthew Pope. Mike also cherished the companionship of the family's beloved dog, Gunny, who stayed close by his side.

A memorial service to celebrate Mike's life will be held at The River at Wrightsville Ave. Church of God, 12:00 noon on Saturday, March 28, 2026.
Mike will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
