William Wikle Obituary

William "Bill" Hooper Wikle

August 7, 1935 - March 18, 2025

Hixson, Tennessee - William Hooper Wikle, 89, of Macon, Georgia passed away after a brief illness on March 18th, 2025.

Bill was born August 7, 1935, to the late Edward Lane Wikle and Pauline Haney Wikle. He spent his early years in Atlanta, Georgia where he attended Boys High, later Grady High School. He then attended Georgia Tech, majoring in Civil Engineering.

After moving to Macon with his family in 1965, he went to work for the City of Macon Traffic Engineering Department and served as the Macon Bibb County Traffic Engineer until his retirement in 2001. He dedicated his career to improving the safety and efficiency of middle Georgia's roadways. During his time as Traffic Engineer he pioneered the system of reversable lanes used along Pio Nono Avenue in north Macon. This was first time that system had been used in the country and, for a time, came to be known as the "Macon Option" in the industry. He was always proud of that and other innovations throughout his long career. Even more so, he truly cherished the relationships and friendships he developed over his career.

Throughout his life, Bill enjoyed boating, loved old country music, and was very dedicated to his children, always being there to support their many activities. He was a baseball coach, served as President of the Ocmulgee Little League, and later oversaw construction of a new recreation complex off Shurling Drive. In his retirement years, he enjoyed traveling with family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine O'Kelley Wikle. He is survived by his daughter Connie; sons Billy and John; and grandsons Clay and Nate Oliver, Xan and Caleb Wikle, and George, Garrett, Joshua, and Jake Wikle.

A Celebration of his life will be held on Friday, April 11, 2025, at 12:30 p.m. at Snow's Memorial Chapel, 1419 Bass Road, Macon GA followed by a graveside service at Rose Hill Cemetery. There will be a viewing where the family will greet friends from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Snow's Memorial Chapel, Bass Road, Macon GA. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

I have such fond memories from Ocmulgee Little League! My parents were such good friends with Mr. & Mrs. Wikle. Later in life, he told me to please call him "Bill." Such a kind, funny and generous man. Wishing the family love and prayers.

Bill was such a devoted guy whether it was family or work he was loyal! I enjoyed our chats over the years, he always had something positive or complimentary to say. I first got to know him at the City credit union and years later with the Ga Guard CU. He was a good guy and Macon was lucky to have folks like him
