Frank Huitt Obituary

Frank had a colorful and full life. He was born in Texas, migrated to New York City with his family for a time and then ended up in Madison WI where he graduated from West H.S. He dabbled a bit as a High School football player but decided to use his brain instead of his brawn even though he was quite the physical presence. His first passion was a part-time job working in radio while attending UW-Madison. His on air name was "Franklin Smith". He covered the Vietnam War along with the many protests and took his fair share of tear gas while doing so. As a side note, Frank did commercials on the radio for Madison Steam and Dye, a dry cleaner and was know as "Mr. Steam" of the Mr. Steam and Dye team in their commercials. His claim to fame.

Frank married young and is survived by his one and only favorite daughter Mindy along with her partner Linda. Frank is also survived by his sister Cindy who lives in Maryland. Frank was a caring, supportive, non judgmental father.

Frank graduated from UW Madison. One of his first full time jobs was a speech writer for Martin Schreiber (29th governor of Wisconsin). He also had his own hand in politics as well, serving numerous terms as a Dane County Supervisor. He moved onto a career at DOT where he eventually retired. Frank established lifelong friendships while there and met his best friends Dorothy and Skip. They, along with friend Ellen became their own best gang group who routinely met for lunch and or cocktails every few weeks or so up until his passing. Frank was not short of talent. He played drums and later in life even worked on mastering the guitar. He was involved with a number of bands and played a variety of gigs. He was fun to watch and listen to throughout the years. In addition, Frank was an awesome marksman. He was a member of the Lodi Gun Club and for a short while was the president of the club. Frank loved to buzz around on his motorcycle and when he wasn't in motion, he was an avid reader.

Frank's final home was at Charter Senior Living, where he was well cared for. Special thanks to the staff at Charter Senior Living who provided daily support, kindness, compassion and good conversations. Frank received wonderful care from St Croix hospice as well. Per Frank's request there will be no memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to St Croix Hospice. Checks can be made out to the "Hospice Support Foundation" on behalf of St. Croix Hospice.

In July of 1972, when I was barely 12 years old, Frank invited me to shadow him as he conducted his radio talk show. Later, we attended a news conference with Mayor Bill Dyke. That single act of kindness ignited in me a love for journalism and television broadcasting that lasted 40+ years. Thank you brother Frank. My condolences to Frank´s family.

Mindy and Linda
Very sorry to learn about Mindy´s dad. It is not easy when your parents die.

I grew up in Madison in the West High School neighborhood near Frank's house. Around 1962, we had a group of neighborhood kids that would drive out to Verona and go swimming out in the gravel pit. I think that Frank was the only kid with a diver's license; so would drive us out there.
We never told our parents. (I believe that our parents would not have approved, because swimming was prohibited at he pit).

To the Family of Frank Huitt,
I have fond memories of Frank working with him at the Wisconsin DOT. He wrote numerous speeches and remarks for me for various highway safety events. I thoroughly enjoyed his stories from when he worked for Governor Schreiber. Frank had quite a career. I had several opportunities to listen to Frank´s musical talents. His WisDOT band, "The Speedbumps" entertained us at several WisDOT events. Frank was a gifted man and we will miss him very much.
Sincerely,
David Collins

Happy hours will not be the same without Frank's wit, his political opinions, and his friendly, supportive nature. I feel fortunate that I was able to join the DOT gang.

Frank was one of my mentors, when I joined WISM AM&FM in 1971. He was a good man and was known and respected in the community.
