Dr. Gary Philip Williams
June 30, 1948 - August 21, 2024
RESTON, VA - Dr. Gary Philip Williams passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at Reston Hospital, Reston, VA.
Gary was born in New Yok City on June 30,1948. After spending his formative years in New York, Gary attended and received his undergraduate degree from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. He went on to attend medical school at The University of Pennsylvania.
Gary did his residency at Cedar-Sinai Medical Center in California and stayed on to practice internal medicine for a few years.
Gary, however, found his real passion and calling in working with and caring for children. He moved to Madison, Wisconsin and did a two-year pediatric residency at the University of Wisconsin. Gary then began working at the General Pediatric and Adolescent Clinic of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and was Associate Professor of Pediatrics with expertise in pediatric dermatology. He practiced in Wisconsin for 40 years. Gary excelled at his craft. He loved his work, a fact that was evident in the time and devotion he gave to his patients.
Outside of work, Gary enjoyed snow skiing, tennis, photography, chess and travel. Gary studied the piano. Later in life he developed a love for pool and spent time traveling to tournaments as well as taking advantage of some of the local pool halls. Gary was a true foodie and loved both the fine dining experience as well as any eating establishment that served great food.
To say Gary had a broad expanse of knowledge would be a real understatement. His sharp mind, endless curiosity and dry wit were immediately evident to everyone who met him. The courage and determination he displayed over the past difficult five years of his life were a testament to his strength of will.
Gary was loved by his family, friends, and the many patients who were under his care. He is survived by his sister, Marilyn Williams, and a host of cousins.
The Williams family is grateful to all the doctors, nurses, aides, caregivers and support organizations who cared for Gary over the past few years. We want to especially express our appreciation to the Hunters Woods at Trails Edge community for not only providing Gary with a place to live but giving him a true home in which he could live and thrive during the last years of his life.
In expressing your adoration and memory of Gary, the family request that you please donate to the charity of your choice.

Gary was one of the true icons in our UW Department of Pediatrics. I was fortunate to meet him during my 3rd and 4th years of medical schoolin the late 1980s, and what a treat to eventually be on faculty with him at UW! Gary was generous with his knowledge and was never bothered by a questions including those on evenings and weekends! Gary led by example, and we were fortunate to have him for a teacher and colleague.

I am writing for four of us who trained with Gary as residents (JoAnn, Jenny and Katie), two of whom went on to be work colleagues in pediatrics. He was such a kind and thoughtful man and teacher, and such a gentle leader (who did have quite a sense of humor). He became my "go to guy" whenever I was seeing a child with an unusual skin condition. In those early years, before cameras on cell phones, and when the department was smaller and sharing clinic space, he would just come to see the child I was seeing with me. He always went above and beyond. We lost touch as the department got bigger and so I did not get a chance to wish him a well deserved congratulations when he retired, and had not realized he had moved to be close to his sister in Virginia. I will always think of Gary with real affection.

I was so sad to learn of Gary´s passing. He was a smart, kind and gentle soul who was quietly supportive. As a pediatric resident, I looked up to Gary and his mastery of the art of medicine. I enjoyed hearing about his interests and remember his ever present camera.
One memory I will always cherish: we often talked about our love of foreign films, and he invited me and 2 other residents for a meal and a couple of his favorite foreign films. It was a joyful afternoon, evening in an inviting home with a special guy. A great escape and a bit of normality in our far from normal lives at that time.
He is dear to me and I mourn his passing. My thoughts are with you all.

As a colleague, tennis player who played a against and with Gary and the parent of a child Gary helped care for, I am deeply sorry to read of his passing. Our family has a vignette involving Gary's care of our child. Our then 3 year old slid off a a chair that revolved hit the back of her head on a desk edge. The fall opened a 2 inch cut on the back of her head and she complained her head hurt. We called the clinic and Gary agreed to stay after the closing hour to see her instead of having us go to the emergency room. After looking at her and determining she was OK, he put stitches into her scalp to close the wound and then wrapped her head with a bandage. Finally he put her in front of a mirror and showed her what the bandage looked like so she would not be surprised later. We left the clinic and as we were leaving the building a tall [well over 6 feet] gentleman was walking in. This 3 year old looked up and said "my doctor fixed my head. I'm OK". Gary "fixed" a lot of children. What a legacy
