Irwin Smith
June 15, 1939 - July 14, 2023
STAMFORD, CT - On July 14, 2023, we lost Irwin Smith, a much-loved father and husband, an outstanding mentor, and a Badger known for his devotion and generosity to the University of Wisconsin.
A graduate of West High School and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (BS '62, MBA '64), he had a successful career in investment management that allowed him to share his love of the work and his insights both through meeting with and teaching business students, and in supporting and advising the Applied Security Analysis Program (ASAP) in the Wisconsin School of Business. In 2001, the School of Business presented him with the Distinguished Business Alumnus Award. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of the University of Wisconsin Foundation, including serving as treasurer from 2003-2007.
In addition to giving time, he supported the construction and outfitting of the D.C. Smith Teaching Greenhouse, named in honor of his father; the Fluno Center; and the American Family Children's Hospital.
He was a lover of golf, the possessor of a dry sense of humor, and a supporter of the aspirations and dreams of others. He and Linda, his wife of 57 years, had recently relocated from Arizona to Connecticut to be closer to their children.
He is survived by Linda; son, Stephen; daughter in law, Jacquelyn; and grandchildren: Spencer and Madeline, in Connecticut; daughter, Susan, in Washington DC; and brother, Rick in California.
