John Albert Obituary

John C. Albert

SUN PRAIRIE - John C. Albert, 78, passed away peacefully at home after enduring a difficult battle with cancer. John was born in Madison, Wisc., on November 4, 1946 to Philip and Rita Albert. He was the oldest of three children. He graduated from Edgewood High School in 1964 and earned his undergraduate and law degrees from U.W. Madison. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1970 and served honorably as a clerk in Fairbanks, Alaska. He started his legal career at Dane County Legal Services, spent 25 years in private practice where he focused on criminal, civil and juvenile law. He was appointed to a judgeship in Dane County Circuit Court Branch 3 in 1999 where he served for 15 years, concentrating on civil, juvenile and family law.

John lived his life marked by integrity, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to justice, earning the respect of colleagues and the community for his fairness, sharp mind, and deep moral compass. He was a tireless advocate for equal rights for all, standing up for those who could not stand up for themselves, both inside and outside the courtroom. To his family, John was more than his titles. He had an easygoing manner, a mischievous sense of humor and, most importantly, a humility that endeared him to so many. John had a very clear sense of right and wrong and a generous heart, always ready to help anyone in need. He taught his children lessons in kindness, compassion, and courage that the world needs now more than ever. He never offered an opinion without a deep amount of thought, so when it came you could be sure it was a well composed verdict or at least a clever wisecrack.

Outside of his professional life, John found his greatest joy in the outdoors. He enjoyed many travels and adventures throughout his life, golfing trips with buddies, epic RV trips with family, fishing trips to Canada with his sons and grandsons and many other friends, deer hunting, turkey hunting, salmon fishing in Alaska, moose hunting, dog sledding, mission trips to Haiti and El Salvador, travel adventures to other countries and, perhaps his favorite and happiest moments, spending time with friends and family at his cottage on Squirrel Lake. He enjoyed Alaskan Amber beer, butterscotch milk shakes and Friday night fish fries.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Rita.

John is survived by his loving wife, Ann; his children, David Albert, Austin Albert (Caleigh Horan), and Sara Albert (Doug) - Greene; his grandchildren, Cade, Cole and Hadley; his siblings, Philip (Pauli) Albert and Janet (Michael) Pawelski.

He leaves a legacy of compassion, humor, and steadfast principles that will continue to inspire all who knew him.

A visitation to honor John's life will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, August 21, 2025, at the Tuschen-Newcomer Funeral Home, 302 Columbus St. in Sun Prairie, Wisc. A Prayer Service will be held at 6 p.m., followed by the Lions Club Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Habitat for Humanity in his memory.

Yesterday

After years of insisting that "you'd have to be crazy" to ever go ice-fishing, John invited me to join him and a few other local friends for just such a trip to northern Minnesota. It was 3-below zero the first morning, but, since I'd taken John's advice and was well dressed for the weather, that day, and the several that followed turned out to be my chance to eat my words.... and more than one full dinner of fresh perch. To say that John was the catalyst for years of subsequent trips and enjoyment would be to understate how much I enjoyed knowing him. I'll miss you John!

A fine, decent, kind, understanding and helpful person blessed with a spicy sense of humor. He will be missed by all who had the pleasure to meet him and share trout and poker.
