Phillip Mayer Obituary

Mayer, Phillip Brumder

MADISON - Phillip Brumder Mayer, age 87, died on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2021, at Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg, Wis. He was born Nov. 22, 1933, in Milwaukee, and graduated from Milwaukee Country Day School (USM) and Dartmouth College (English). He was active in the Dartmouth Outing Club, loved the outdoors, and was an avid reader.

After two years in U.S. Army Finance Corps, he worked in plastics, then Western Snowplows, and in 1968 joined Luitink Manufacturing Co., (founded 1888) as vice president, eventually buying controlling interest and became one of the largest contract stainless steel stampers in Wisconsin. Phil belonged to numerous small business organizations and was on several boards. He retired from Luitink in 1993, wintered in upstate South Carolina, but always returned to his beloved cabin in Iowa County, Wis., for the summer. In 2015, he returned to reside at Oakwood Village near Sun Prairie.

He was preceded in death by parents, Rudolph H. and Evelyn (Luitink) Mayer; and wife, Alice (Weigell) Mayer. He is survived by Amalie Sabatini, daughter of Phillip and Victoria (Krause) Mayer; sister, Carolyn (George) Pratt; brother, Rudolph E. Mayer; stepchildren, Elizabeth (Rick) Chaltry, James (Lori) Read, and Peter (Lisa) Read; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Burial will take place at Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee in July as a private family gathering. Memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church in Mineral Point.
