Dear Nancy, Barbara, Linda and Laurie,
I am so saddened to hear of Bob's passing. I moved to Cape Cod this summer and having thought of him, and his delight in this special place many times. I'm sad I didn't get the chance to tell him we were here. Bob was such a good man. Such a sparkle always lurking beneath his attention and warmth. I will always cherish the trip he 'rented' me for, when I was 10 or 11, to accompany Barb and Steve on a camping adventure to the Grand Canyon. I always thought that Bob had invented the notion of the camper van. He designed and built a marvelous, efficient camping space into the back of a basic van: One kid in the passenger seat upfront, one kid stretched out on the bunk in the back, and the third straddling the ice chest behind the two front seats. Windows wide open, barreling down the interstate on a hot summer day. What a wonderful trip. I remember that we were camping near a lake somewhere in the Dakotas and had gone down for a swim. It was windy and there was a kid in an innertube halfway across the small lake, who fell out as the wind blew the inner tube out of his reach& Bob dove in and swam out to rescue him. It was an heroic moment, which he never thought twice about. I will always carry his memory. Love to you all.
