Douglas Percy Obituary

Douglas Brent Percy of New Waterford, Ohio transitioned to his eternal home on April 16, 2025. Born May 24, 1958, in Salem, Ohio to Daniel J. Percy and Betty Louise (Dickey) Percy. Doug faced many health conditions bravely and with determination throughout his life. He was a friend to all and a hero to his family. Doug graduated from Crestview Local School District in 1977 through its Special Education program. He entered and completed the vocational training program offered by Goodwill Industries in Youngstown. Upon its completion, he was placed at the Crestview Local School District as a custodian under a work cooperative program through Goodwill for one year. After proving his ability to meet these responsibilities, he was hired full time in 1980. He retired from the school's employment in 2010 and often teased his older sisters that he retired before them. Doug worked a few hours per week for C & K Petroleum Products, Inc cleaning the shop/warehouse area until 2010.
Upon his retirement, Doug mowed lawns for friends and neighbors in New Waterford. If they were on fixed incomes, he asked only the price of the gas. Doug knew everyone in New Waterford and everyone knew him. He was a friend to everyone he met. He made his rounds in the community on a daily basis, visiting the auto repair shop, beauty shop, convenience store, and the dollar store, to name just a few on his route. Often, he would appear at the retail stores near closing time to be with the clerks as they closed for the day and walked them safely to their cars. Doug was giving; he was kind; he was difficult; he was loved.
Doug loved country music and watching old westerns on tv. But the highlight of each year was the trip to Amish country with his niece, Monica and camping at the Columbiana County Fair in Lisbon and the Mahoning County Fair in Canfield. There he reconnected with his fair friends with the added joy of meeting more. Doug loved picnics with friends and family and was known as the homemade ice cream maker, toppings not included.
Nothing happened in his community that he didn't know. He attended every community function that his health permitted. He was the "unofficial" mayor of New Waterford. He is now united with his parents and infant brother, Dennis Percy. He leaves in this life a family that will miss his laughter, stories, and contrary attitude: sisters, Carol Ann (Kenneth) Robb of New Waterford and Kimberly Sue (David) Cope of Fremont; and brother, Eric Percy of Columbiana. He will be greatly missed by his siblings, as well as his nieces and nephews; Monica Robb Blasdel, Sarah Robb, Amanda Robb, Jason Cope, Rachel (Cope) Cochran, Joshua (Kayla) Percy, Adrienne Percy, Jonathan Percy, and Andrea Percy. Doug took special delight in his 12 great nieces and nephews, all of whom adored him.
A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, April 28, 2025, at 2:00 pm at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana with Ken Rambo officiating. A time of visitation will be held from 12:00 pm until the time of service at 2:00 pm on Monday. The family has requested that funeral attire should be a flannel shirt in memory of Doug.
