George Vickers Obituary

George A. Vickers, 96, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2025 in Rome, NY surrounded by his loving family. George was born in Athens, Ohio on July 22, 1929 to Vernon and Lucile Vickers. He was a devoted husband, father, and great-grandfather. His life was a testament to strength, courage, love and above all else, family. In 1952, George graduated from the United States Air Force Cadet program and married the love of his life, Mary Ann Pecsi, soon thereafter. The military took them to Texas, Florida, Alaska and finally to Griffiss AFB in Rome, where George served until 1955. After his service to country, he began a successful career in insurance sales that spanned over four decades. George is survived by his five children: David (Vicky) of Rome; Carl of South Carolina; Stephan (Jackie) of Idaho; Stephanie (Victor) of Arizona and Peggianne (Dimas) of Oregon. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Zachary (Ashley) Vickers, Colby (Michelle) Vickers, Lisa Vickers (Gary), Jessica (Bob) Moran, Ian (Sarah) Vickers, Kierstin Vickers (Joe), Kelsi Krabbendam, Alex (Tiana) Krabbendam and Ethan Krabbendam. George also leaves behind nine great-grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife Mary Ann in 2006 and his best furry friend, Rose. George was a dedicated member of the First Presbyterian Church in Rome for over 70 years. During that time he faithfully served in many capacities. His love for God and his church was steadfast. George was a man of wisdom, kindness and unwavering guidance. He was unassuming and held himself to a higher standard. He taught his children the values of kindness, honesty, humility and patience by the way he lived his life. George loved sailing and was the captain of his family; the calm amid both the tranquil and stormy sea that is life. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. The family would like to thank Hospice as well as The Abraham House of Rome for the care and compassion shown to George during his illness. A Memorial Service will be held 11 am Saturday August 2nd at Strong-Burns & Sprock Funeral Home, 7751 Merrick Road, Rome, NY. Arrangements have been entrusted to Prince-Boyd & Hyatt Home for Funerals, Inc., Rome. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in George's memory to the Wounded Warrior Project, Hospice/Palliative Care Oneida County or The Abraham House of Rome, NY. My husband and I knew George from when we first moved into Glendale Manor in the '70s. I loved his smile and sense of humor.
