Jean Duck Obituary
Jean E. Duck, formerly known as Jean Marie Eberlin, age 75 of Salem, OH passed peacefully at Hospice House on March 14th, 2025, following a lengthy battle with health complications which she fought with strength and grace.
She was born July 22nd, 1949, in Muncy Valley, PA to Robert Bacon and Mary Alice (Myers) Eberlin.
She grew up on North Mountain riding her ponies and horse through creeks, woods and the beautiful countryside of the Pennsylvania mountains. She had a rich childhood filled with memories made with family and friends over the years.
Jean was a 1967 graduate of Sullivan County High School and graduated from Lock Haven State College in 1971 with a Bachelor of Liberal Arts majoring in English and Humanities. She went on to further her education by attending Youngstown State University where she obtained an associate's degree in nursing in 1983.
She started her career out as a child protective case manager in the rural mountains of West Virginia where referrals took her to interesting places, some of which could only be reached by crossing a hanging bridge made of rope and wood. She and her husband were house parents in a college dorm in WVU. Career opportunities brought her and her family to Youngstown, Ohio where she began a career in nursing as an RN in a hospital setting before settling and finishing her career at Omni Manor, where she was a caring nurse in a long-term care setting for over 20 years. Jean has always cared for others, both in her career and in her private life.
Jean enjoyed reading, crocheting, walks with friends and family, and most of all cooking and baking for her family and friends. She was known for her potato salad and cucumber salad which were requested by many. As a woman of faith, she was an active churchgoer. She was a board member on the Columbiana County Board of Developmental Disabilities for twelve years. She doted on her children and grandchildren, working midnights so she could haul them to endless practices, club meetings, horse shows, and more. She was affectionately shared with fellow 4-H club members as a "club mom". She was passionate about family and lived a life of service, often putting others' needs before her own. To those who knew her as family, friend, neighbor and even strangers she was loving, kind, compassionate, empathetic, loyal, hardworking, patient and was the embodiment of core values and characteristics we should all hope to have and be. She was often referred to as a saint by those who knew her. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She was married to Larry Duck for 32 years before they divorced.
Those who survive Jean are her 96-year-old father Robert Eberlin, son Jason Duck (Melanie), daughters Heather Waselich (Brian) and Jenna Rovira, grandsons Trevor Berlin, Nathaniel Duck and Joseph Bryan, step-granddaughters Sullen and Zaillin Rovira, and great step-grandson Latham Rovira-Crosdale.
Preceding her in death are James and John Duck (twin sons who passed shortly after being born prematurely) and her mother Mary Eberlin.
There will be no calling hours, or funeral services per her preference. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date to celebrate her legacy.
A special thank you goes out to the staff and residents of The Addison of Cornersberg (assisted living) who welcomed her and her cat Leo into their community for a short but special time before her passing. The family would also like to thank all the staff and volunteers at Hospice House for their compassionate care. Those who wish to express sympathy may do so by making a memorial donation to Hospice of the Valley.
