Joan A. Shrodek, age 96 of Cortland passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2024. She was born on June 13, 1927, in Niles to the late August and Filomena Fraino Madish.
Joan was a loving and caring mother and grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family and had a special place in her heart for her grandchildren. She was a devout Catholic and a parishioner of St. Roberts Catholic Church.
She was born in Niles where she attended and graduated from Niles McKinley High School in 1946, later obtaining an associate degree. She met her husband Stephen and they were married on May 18, 1951 and together they moved to Cortland.
She was a talented artist who worked in many different areas, painting portraits or landscapes, even quilting and working with needlepoint. Joan enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and solving Sudoku. She was an avid reader and a fan of TV Westerns. She was a very independent and witty person, who lived a very rich and full life.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Stephen Shrodek; son, Steve Shrodek; 4 sisters and 1 brother, along with her four-legged companion Casey.
She is survived by her daughters, Joni (Fred) Pratt and Kate (Ralph) Guesman; grandchildren, Kelly (Jason) Fried, Kristy (Joe) Johnson, Kara (Shaun) Totten, Trevor (Allison) Richards, Jason (Erin) Shrodek, Adam Guesman, and Tyler (Mike) Slabaugh; great grandchildren, Niya, Caden, Noah, Zane, Cameron, Andrew, Connor, Ethan, Norah, Abigail, Leah, Ryan, and Evan and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting monetary donations be made to Angels for Animals or the Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County.
Calling hours will be held 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM Thursday, May 16, 2024 at Lane Funeral Home, Shafer-Winans Chapel 164 N. High St. Cortland, OH 44410 with a prayer service to follow at 11:00 AM. Interment will be held at Hillside Cemetery. Online condolences can be made at www.lanefuneralhomes.com.
