Robert Susany Obituary

On Saturday, May 18, 2024, Robert "Bob" E. Susany, age 94, of Poland OH, passed away peacefully. He was born August 1, 1929 in Poland, OH, the son of John R and Mary Susany. Bob was a 1947 graduate of Poland Seminary High School. On August 19, 1950, he married the former Peggy Taggart (Teichert). Together, they celebrated nearly 74 years of marriage. Along with his wife, he leaves three sons, Dan (Pam) Susany, Doug Susany, and Dave (Mary) Susany; and daughters, Debbie Triveddi and Diane (Wayne) Walkama. He also leaves behind 11 grandchildren, Ryan and Caitlyn O'Farrell, Jeff and Greg Susany, Jenna (Melvin) Detweiler, Steve (Cara) Susany, Gary (Carly) Walkama, Jessica Walkama, Megan Kauffman, Rachel, and Kaitlyn Susany; 12 great-grandchildren, Colin, Cailey, Gavin, Austin, Nora, Olivia, Wyatt, Benjamin, Gabriel, Caroline, Levi, and Sofia; and sisters, Geraldine Heffinger of Salem and Barbra Hope of New Middletown. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Frank, William, and John Jr.; three sisters, Francis and Mary Susany and Helen Fabian; and his brother-in-law, Russell Taggart. As a young kid, Bob enjoyed working on the local Becker and Thullen family farms. After graduating high school, he would go on to work for Republic Steel for 33 years as a metallurgist. Although the steel mill was his occupation, farming was his passion. After acquiring more land in the 1960's, Bob expanded his farming endeavors. He would often work the night shift at the mill so he could spend his days tending the fields and doing carpentry work. Together with his wife and family, Bob worked tirelessly to turn a small strawberry patch and vegetable garden into what is now known as Countryside Farm. He was proud to be able to provide for his family off of the land. He also enjoyed sharing his harvest with others, always sending friends and visitors home with a dozen ears of sweet corn or a peck of tomatoes. Bob was relentless in his lifelong fight against weeds, groundhogs, and the weather. He enjoyed taking a break to catch the weekly Notre Dame football or Cleveland Indians loss. He valued hard work and was happiest when one of his children, grandchildren, or their friends would join in helping him with the daily tasks. He created a legacy that his family will always cherish, including his infamous endive salad, homemade smoked sausage, and the farm that his great-grandchildren continue to enjoy. Per his wishes, there will not be a memorial service. A celebration of life will follow in the summer when the sweet corn comes in, and his ashes will be returned to the ground he spent his life cultivating. The family would like to thank the staff at the Caprice Senior Care Facility in North Lima who cared for him in the final months of his life, and a special thanks to his roommate Ron for keeping him company.
