William O'Neill Obituary

William E. "Bill" O'Neill, 81, of Sharpsville, passed away Tuesday morning, September 9, 2025, in UPMC Horizon Hospital, Farrell. Mr. O'Neill was born on October 18, 1943, in Sharon, a son of the late John E. and Alice (Hanahan) O'Neill. A lifelong area resident, Bill was a 1961 graduate of Sharpsville High School. He also honorably served his country during the Vietnam War in the U.S. Marine Corps. Following his military duties, Bill returned home and worked as a scheduler in the repair shop of the former General American Transportation Corp. (GATX), Masury, OH. Upon the plant's closure, he began working in the Mercer County Welfare Office, where he retired as a caseworker. While working at GATX, he played in the company's basketball league at the Buhl Club in Sharon. Bill was a member of St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church, Sharpsville. "WEO," as he was also known by friends and family, loved to be "Out and About" or "Making his Rounds." Bill was also a member of the American Legion, Post 162, and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 6404, both in Sharpsville. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and going on trips to the mountains. He also liked umpiring for the Sharpsville Little League. Bill was a proud Irishman who perfected his own homemade "Irish Cream" and was a big fan of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He was also a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Boston Celtics, and the New York Yankees. He was also an avid (and excellent) euchre player. He is survived by his wife, the former Jane McMahon, whom he married on April 27, 1968; three sons, Darren Patrick O'Neill (Tracy), of Brentwood, PA, Shawn William O'Neill, and Terrence Miles O'Neill (Tracy), all of Sharpsville; and two grandchildren, Maddox Calvin and Miley Taryn O'Neill. Also surviving are three sisters-in-law, Elaine Missory, of Sharon, Patricia Sanker, of Brookfield, OH, and Patricia McMahon, of Hermitage; a brother-in-law, Jim McMahon (Elena), of Conneaut, OH; and many nieces and nephews. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his beloved grandchildren and taking them to get "Slushies." In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by three brothers, John (Nilla), Daniel (Ceya) and Thomas (Margaret) O'Neill. The family suggests memorial contributions be directed to the Sharpsville Veterans of Foreign Wars, 215 N. Walnut St., Sharpsville, PA 16150. Calling hours will be 4 to 6 p.m. Friday (09/12/2025) in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc.,1090 East State St., Sharon. Funeral service and military honors will immediately follow at 6 p.m. on Friday, in the funeral home. Interment: St. Mary's Cemetery, Hermitage.
