Frances Mohagen Obituary

Frances Caroline Mohagen

Frances Caroline Mohagen of Hoquiam, Washington and former resident of Ashland, Oregon died August 23, 2006 from complications following a massive stroke. She was 72.

Caroline came to Ashland from southern California in the fall of 1983, and worked in partnership with her sister, Phyllis Courtney, operating the McCall House Bed & Breakfast on Oak Street. A collector of antiques since early childhood, Caroline will be remembered as the owner and operator of Antiques, Etc., her shop on B Street. She will also be remembered as "Gra'ma" by Staff and residents, and many former residents of the Lithia Springs Girls House where she devoted many voluntary hours as a caring and loving foster Grandmother. In the spring of 2001 Caroline moved to Hoquiam, Washington, where she again established a successful antique business, and became well-known for her expertise in the field of costume and antique jewelry, and was often consulted for appraisals at various antique shows in the northwest.

Caroline is survived by five sons: David Lyle, Paul William, Daniel Frederick, Peter Albert and Benjamin Mohagen; seven grandchildren: Christopher, Matthew, Amanda, Alexander, Jonathon, Ruby and Jeromy Mohagen all of the Los Angeles, California area. Infant son, Andrew Martin, and son John Lincoln preceded her in death. Also surviving are her sister, Phyllis Courtney, of Wheeler, OR, a niece Nancy Caroline Mansfield, of Manzanita, OR, a nephew, Alexander Knecht, two grandnieces, Ashley and Carly Knecht, of Ashland, as well as her dear friend and close associate, Michael Gyde of Hoquiam, and two much-loved canine companions, Charlie and Minnie.

Celebrations of Caroline's life are planned in both Washington and Oregon to take place sometime in the Spring.

Caroline was my dear neighbor on "b" street for many years. She had such wonderful stories to share with me of her and her sister's childhood. She was a great joy to know and I am sure to many others as well. She will be greatly missed. My condolences to Phyllis, and Caroline's children, nieces and nephews.

Caroline was a genuinely kind and generous woman -- and very good company. I'm sorry her grandchildren won't be able to grow up with her in their lives. My best love to Phyllis, Michael, the Mohagens, and Knechts as they face life without Caroline.
