Ruth B. Heuscher, a resident of Medford, Ore. for the past 17 years, passed away peacefully at her residence at Rogue Valley Manor on July 3, 2008. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Julius Heuscher M.D. Surviving relatives are her sons, Dominic Heuscher, of Aurora, Ohio, and Enno Heuscher (daughter-in-law, Penny) of Grand Junction, Colo.; and two grandchildren, Sonja Heuscher and Zachary Heuscher.

Ruth had just celebrated her 92nd birthday in Medford with her son and daughter-in-law.

She was born in St. Gallen, Switzerland, trained to become an ophthamologist in Lausanne and then emigrated to the United States after an engagement with Julius Heuscher which spanned the entire length of WWII while he, a new immigrant from Switzerland, was finishing his training in the United States. Immediately after WWII, they married and began a new life together in Los Gatos, Calif.

Ruth Heuscher began her professional career doing research in ophthamology at Stanford University. She earned her license to practice medicine and served on the California State Medical Board for several years and worked with several ophthamologists in Los Gatos, Calif.

Ruth and Julius enjoyed many trips with their children to Arizona, the California ski mountains, as well as Switzerland. She supported her husband in many endeavors over the 60 years that they were married. Ruth would travel with him to many of his speaking engagements and in fact, she was at his side in Zurich, Switzerland when he passed away suddenly at age 88 while on a trip to a speaking engagement in Prague.

Ruth was loved by her family and by many of the Rogue Valley Manor residents and staff. She was an ardent supporter of the San Francisco Opera, San Francisco Symphony, Rogue Valley Symphony, Rogue Valley Opera, and her church, the Christian Community.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. on August 3rd at Rogue Valley Manor, with Rev. Oliver Steinrueck providing the service of the sacrament. A cremation has taken place and burial will be on October 31, 2008 in the Zurich Cemetery adjacent to her husband.
