1928-2014
FAIRFIELD - Herbert H. "Scrib/Herb" Scribner, 85, passed peacefully in his home while surrounded by family on October 26, 2014.
Herb was born in Fairfield on November 20, 1928, to Albert and Altie (Merrow) Scribner. He attended Lawrence High School and served in the Maine National Guard before becoming a machinist with Keyes Fibre Company where he retired after 37 years.
Scrib was well known throughout the community serving in numerous organizations and championing many causes. He attained the office of Past Grand Master in the Fairfield Odd Fellows Lodge and past Noble Grand of the Goodwill Rebecca Lodge. He was deeply involved with Fairfield Boy Scout Troop 470, and in 1969 Herb was the one who brought the Cub Scout program to Fairfield when he formed Cub Pack 471 which is still active today. Scrib successfully lead the effort to establish Alcoholics Anonymous Right Track meetings as nonsmoking, something that many thought would be impossible. He also found time to volunteer with New Directions, serve as a 24-hour hotline volunteer with Alcoholics Anonymous, and to donate blood which he did from age 18 to 81. During his 36 years with the Fairfield First Baptist Church, he served as a Deacon and a Trustee. Twenty of those years were spent representing the church at the Fairfield Interfaith Food Pantry.
He loved the out of doors and spent as much time as possible hiking the Appalachian Trail, camping the Maine woods, and canoeing the Maine waters. He devoted his time as a father-figure to many young men from single-parent homes taking them camping, hiking and climbing Mount Katahdin. Scrib also spent numerous hours volunteering with the Appalachian Trail Club. One of his fondest memories was of the time he hiked the 100-mile wilderness with his youngest son. When he wasn't in the Maine woods, Scrib was traveling and taking in the natural beauty of Europe, Canada, and our own great country via the North American highways. He also loved wintering with his wife in Arizona. When at home, he was an avid two-finger bowler and faithful member of the Old and Ugly Coffee Club.
Herb is predeceased by his sisters, Velma Sprague, Irma Shea, and Mildred Waning; and his brothers, Maurice and Harvey.
He is survived by his wife of almost 66 years, Maxine; his sons, David, of Fairfield, Kenneth, of Waterville, and Mark and his partner, Marcia Maheu, of Dresden; his daughters, Linda Boyd and husband Dan, of San Antonio, Texas, Eileen Berning and husband Dave, of Litchfield Park, Arizona, and Karen Winfree and husband Pete, of Fairfield; grandchildren Robert and Jonathan Dodge, Kirstie Martin and her husband, Tom, Sarah Scribner, Andrea Berning, Tony McCaslin, and Kaitlyn Burke and her husband, Jeremy; and great-grandchildren Kimberlyn, Brady, and Kaylie Martin. He is also survived by his brother, Norman and wife Pat Scribner, of Florida; and cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Services will be held at the Fairfield First Baptist Church at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 30, 2014. Visiting hours will be from noon to 2 p.m. on that day.
The family would like to thank MaineGeneral Health Hospice for all of their professional and personal support. He was a wonderful Man. Made feel right at home when I use to hang out at his House with Mark and later on when I joined Scouting. He would always say hello to me every time I saw him. He would say may name and laugh and say Randy's Brother Huh? Always enjoyed talks about my Camp and the outdoors. Will sadly miss him although it had been awhile. Condolences to the Scribner Family.

Dear Maxine and Family,
My sincere sympathy on the loss of Herb. He was such a nice man. I remember him hiking with the church youth group. The kids could hardly keep up with him. He was an inspiration to many!

My Deepest condolences to the Scribner family in your loss of an amazing man. I had the wonderful privilege of meeting Herb when he came in to Winslow Automotive. He was always full of stories and kept me entertained while waiting for his car. He had a way of making you laugh and putting a smile on your face. We always had a visit with him saying "RIGHT ON RIGHT ON" he spoke so fondly of his family and I know he loved you all dearly. May you be at peace.

Aunt Maxine,
It's sad that sometimes you don't really realize how much a person contributes to our world until you read about it. I know you are very proud of all of his accomplishments. And, I know he was so glad to have such a wonderful wife and children.

With sadness I read about Herb's passing, yet have joy in the Resurrection. Herb always had the "attitude of gratitude", a man who new the depth of grace of the Lord in his life. Till that day when we gather at the Banquet Table of the Lamb...
