James Duncklee Obituary

James Kenneth Roche Duncklee
1957 - 2018
HALLOWELL - James Kenneth Roche Duncklee, 60, passed away on April 14, 2018, after a courageous battle with cancer. Jim was born in Augusta on Nov. 22,1957. He was the son of Barbara Duncklee Martin, James Barry Roche and Donald Duncklee.
Jim graduated from Hall-Dale High School in 1976. He received his undergraduate degree in education from the University of Maine at Farmington and his masters degree from the University of Maine at Orono.
On Jan. 2, 1982, Jim married the love of his life, Katherine, and together shared two wonderful sons, Nathaniel and Dylan, who both made Jim the proudest man in town.
Jim worked for several years in education and left a lasting impression on students, faculty and the community. After 15 years in education, Jim started an investment and retirement planning firm, which he enjoyed right up until his retirement in March of 2018. Jim was committed to serving others and felt that giving back to his family, friends, clients and community was his purpose in life.
Jim and Kathy raised Nate and Dylan on Park Street in Farmingdale before splitting their residence between Hallowell and Ocean Point, Maine. Jim loved the ocean and enjoyed the time he spent using his boat and walking along Shore Drive.
Each of Jim's boys gave him the biggest thrill of his life in the form of two special daughters-in-law, Erin and Stacia and four precious grandchildren, Bowen, Emmett, Kyla and Liam. For all of us who knew Jim, it did not take long for "Papa's" beaming smile to illuminate as he was raving about his three grandsons and one granddaughter.
Jim loved to travel, but once his grandkids were born, leaving Maine for any extended period of time, did not quite have the luster it used to have. Athletics were also a huge part of Jim's life, from his days playing basketball and baseball for Hall-Dale to following Nathaniel and Dylan while they did the same.
Jim is survived by his wife of 36 years, Katherine McLain Duncklee of Hallowell; two sons, Nathaniel, Erin and their family from South Portland, Dylan and Stacia and their family from Augusta; his mother Barbara of Florida and father Barry of Farmingdale; two brothers Gary and wife Connie of Farmingdale and Glenn and wife Andrea of Florida; several other step siblings; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at Old South Congregational Church, 135 Second St. in Hallowell, with the reverend Susan Reisart officiating. A celebration of Jim's life will follow from noon to 3 p.m. at The Governor Hill Mansion, 136 State St., Augusta. My thoughts and prayers to the Duncklee family! He was an absolutely amazing individual! He was one of my favorite teachers in school and knew how to make learning fun. I still remember my nickname from his class when he would do attendance, Sunset. Rest in peace Mr. Duncklee!

This is such sad news. Dunk and I went to Farmington together along with his Hallowell crew of Cam and Wheels. I always smile at the memories of the things we did and the times we had. Jim always had a smile on his face and was up for any misadventure. Now there's one less passenger on the road trips to Falmouth.

Dear Family of Jim:
I was deeply saddened to hear of Jim's passing. We grew up together and graduated in the same class at HDHS. I have so many good memories of Jim. I just looked at our senior yearbook and there is a picture of Jim our senior year with a big grin on his face with his friends Jay and Ed -there is also a photo on the opposite page of Jay, Ed and Jim at 7 years old with the same big grin on his face. That is how I will remember Jim. He valued his friends and was always good natured. May you find comfort in your many wonderful memories of Jim.

Mr. Duncklee was hands down one of my most influential teachers, and I enjoyed his classes and his personality very, very much. I am so sorry about this loss for his family and for the community. He was a singular human being.

While it is so sad that Jim has left us far too soon, Jim left us with his compassion and a true joy and enthusiasm for living. It is a rich legacy that we can not honor more than by trying to emulate it. Jim, thank you for your life and the many lives you have touched.

Dear Kathy and boys, I'm so very sorry for your loss. Jim was simply one of the best men I've ever known (and I've known him for over 50 yrs!)!!. When I last saw you both ( at the Wolfington wedding) I remember how he went out of his way to do me a small but sweet favor - that really meant a lot to me. That's Jim all the way! He was a fine man who will be missed by many.

Kathy, Nate and Dillon - I am so so sorry that Jim's earthly journey was just too darn short. I know he will forever be your guardian angel and in your hearts. He touched so many lives in so many different areas - education; business/finance; sports; baseball; and did I mention baseball??? I will never forget our times at Colby Sawyer and the yearly trips to Tampa for spring breaks and BASEBALL! You and Jim and Jim's Mom, too, made it such a fun time! My thoughts and prayers will be with you, he will be missed by so many.
God's blessings to you and your family.
Love ya,
Cheryl

I had not seen Jim in about 30 years - since high school - when we reunited about ten years ago. It was like we were 16 again! What a wonderful man, husband and father you were. You leave many people who will never forget you, my friend. I offer my most sincere sympathy to the entire family in what must be an impossibly difficult time.

Kathy,
I am so sorry to hear of this. I was just emailing with "Mr. D" recently about some retirement planning and hoping I would run into him at the office. I'm glad to have had that email exchange with him in which we joked about the game he had us play in 6th grade, "Dunckleeville"; its lessons being about the only thing I learned that year! He was a great teacher. Really knew how to engage people, made learning fun, and didn't underestimate the value of a good bribe to get us kids to behave (pizza party anyone?!?!?!?). Please accept my sincerest apologies on the loss of your husband. A tough loss for your boys as well as I remember Mr. D speaking of them often in school and I always thought they were lucky to have such fun and loving parents. I'll bet he leaves you all with many, many wonderful memories.

Kathy I am so sorry to read about Jim and I know there is nothing anyone can say to you that makes any sense. Hope left us last July and I am sure those two are having a party together, maybe shooting a few hoops. I know that the customary words are rest in peace Jim, but I think that we, the ones left with that big hole in our heart, need the peace. Kathy my heart goes out to you, I feel your pain. Much love Ingrid Vancil

Dear Jimmy, You have built a life of riches with such wonderful family and friends, and I am sorry you've left it so soon. My memories, Jim, of growing up down the street from you, playing in the playground as children, being in the same classrooms as you, and having the pleasure of seeing you from time to time around the town, is you are and always have been solid gold. Nothing will ever change that. My sincere sympathies to Jim's family; he was always a special person, exceptionally kind and thoughtful, and I am so sorry he has left this life so soon.
