Janet Drouin Obituary

WATERVILLE -- Janet Ellen Drouin, 62, of Vassalboro, passed away Thursday, July 17, 2008, after a brief illness.

She was born in Waterville on Aug. 17, 1945, the daughter of Abram and Jeanne Laverdiere Houle. She graduated from Winslow High School in 1963. She received her nursing degrees from the Sisters of Charity Hospital in Waterville and the University of Maine. She was employed at Seton Hospital as a floor nurse and in the ICU unit until she and her husband became owners of Volmer's Nursing Home (now Volmer's Country Living Center). Janet was strongly dedicated to improving the quality of life for the elderly. She served as a clinical consultant for Hi-Tech Software in her quest for excellence in health care.

She was an avid golfer and a member of Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro. She also served as Women's Maine State Golf Association's Handicapper 1992-1999, Tournament Committee 1993, TriState Chair 1996-1997, Scoring Chair 1998-1999, Rules Committee 1999, Historian 2004 to present, Advisory Committee 2004-2005, Public Relations 2005 to present, Executive Board 2006 and 2008 to present and Budget Committee, 2008. She was the president of the Natanis Women's Golf Association for the 2007 and 2008 year. She served on the handicap committee at Natanis and helped run the Monday night Mixed League. Before joining Natanis, she was an active member of the Waterville Country Club.

Mrs. Drouin is survived by her husband, Roland E. Drouin and daughter, Shelly Cunningham and her husband, Shawn, along with their daughters and granddaughters Taylor, Allison and Leah of Falmouth, whom Janet adored. She is also survived by a sister, Charlotte "Bunnie" Picher and her husband, John, of Vassalboro; a brother, John Houle and his wife, Georgia, of Poland; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her parents, Abram and Jeanne Houle; and a sister, Roberta "Bobbie" Houle.

She will be sadly and deeply missed by her family, her husband's family, especially sister-in-law, Theresa Dumont and her husband, Steve; and her many close friends and business associates.

Edna St. Vincent Millay in her poem "First Fig" wrote:

My candle burns at both ends;

It will not last the night;

But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends-

It gives a lovely light!

This makes perfect sense as it applies to Janet's life. Reference to burning a candle at both ends of the dayÉthat is, needing candle light before the sun comes up, and again after the sun goes down. She indeed had been awake earlier and later than most folks throughout her career as a nurse.

She has been there for friends, her family, and her acquaintancesÉdiligently serving despite illnesses that would have incapacitated anyone else.

She was the "nurse in charge," making people better, making things better for all. Whether it meant leaving her bed in the middle of the night to tend to the sick, or organizing a golf league, tournament, or a family bash; she was there. Who knows how many people benefited by her candle's light?

In lieu of flowers, donations to benefit Girls Youth Golf programs may be sent to Women's Maine State Golf Association, Janet Drouin Memorial Fund, c/o Madeline Kilmister, Treasurer, 145 Old Belgrade Road, Augusta, ME 04330.

A memorial service will be celebrated at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 24, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 209 Eastern Ave., Augusta, with the Rev. Donald S. Davenport officiating. Family and friends will gather immediately following the memorial service in the Prince of Peace church hall from 4 to 5:30 p.m. for a time to share. A private interment service will be at a later date.

Arrangements are with Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm St., Waterville.

Roland & Shelley: I am so sorry to hear of Janets passing. I know that she and dad will get together in heaven and play a round of golf. I knew her briefly, but she was a wonderful friend to my mom, and for that I will be eternally grateful. Our thoughts and prayers are with you both.

Dear Family

I was saddened to hear of Janet's passing. I worked with her at the hospital, as a fellow nurse. She was dedicated to her patients and their well being.

She was a very caring giving person, always ready to help. She will be missed, but never forgotten.

With deepest sympathy.

roland and family, i am so sorry for your loss. back in the 'hayday' of maine health care, we all had very great times together. janet was always so full of life, no matter what was going on with her. i know this will leave a gaping hole with all of you, but as the cliche goes, everything happens for a reason....we're not always knowing at the time, but someday it will be clear. my most sincere condolences to you all.

This is to Janets family. I have known her and worked with her years ago at Seton Hospital . I have also been her nurse twice during her illness. I always loved her and respected her loving caring and happy nature. She will be greatly missed by all who ever came in contact with her. She never gave up on life despite the long period of her illness from beginning to end. May God bless all of you and she will be always with you in your hearts.

Mr. Drouin, Shelly and family,

I'm so deeply sorry for your loss. I will always cherish our memories on China Lake and the many years after. But most of all I will always be grateful for the love and support Janet gave to my mother during her illness, and the rest of us at such a difficult time. She was truly a gem and I will miss her dearly. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Roland and family, I am so very sorry to hear about Janet. It was always a pleasure to talk with her if she was around when I visited my mother Phyllis Rodrigue. I appreciated all the things she did to make my mothers stay there pleasant. My thoughts and prayers are with you and yours as well as the residents and staff at Volmers in this difficult time.

Roland & family - I played with Janet for 3 years at Waterville CC & she was just as involved, helpful, welcoming, & caring then. It was a very pleasant surprise when I joined Natanis & found her there. It is true that she has always burned the candle at both ends for so many people in so many ways. I know I will miss her tremendously. I will pray for strength for you & your family to carry on until you can see her again. GOD Bless you all.

Bunnie, John and Family,

My thoughts and prayers are with you on the loss of Janet. Although my memories of her are from my childhood and family gatherings of many years ago, the caring and nurturing for others is a dominant trait of the "Houle" family - one that she truly possessed and shared with all who came across her path. May she rest in peace.
