Joseph Poulin Obituary

AUGUSTA -- Joseph E. Poulin, 93, died Monday, April 25, 2011, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, after a brief illness. He was born in Augusta, May 12, 1917, the son of the late Edmund and Bella (Dumont) Poulin.

Mr. Poulin was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, a lifetime member of Le Club Calumet, a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, a member of the World Health Club and an honorary life member of Abnaki Council 334 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus.

He graduated from Cony High School in 1937. After his service to his country, Mr. Poulin was employed by the United States Veterans Affairs in the Adjudication Division as contact officer for more than 30 years. He served four years in the military during World War II, where he attained the rank of master sergeant in the Fifth Army Air Force. One of his duties was in New Guinea and Asian and Pacific Theatres. He was also a member of the Maine Army National Guard in Augusta

Mr. Poulin was considered one of the best artists in the state of Maine. He did many pencil portraits of notables, including that of governors, military personnel and business people and was the artist of note for Le Club Calumet. He was a commercial artist, including oil paintings and water colors for banners. In later years, he painted Christmas and birthday cards for all his friends.

He was predeceased by his three brothers, Adrian Poulin, Lucien Poulin, and J.P. Vincent Poulin, who all served in the military.

Survivors include his loving partner of many years, Maxine (Hutchinson) Blackburn, of Augusta, who helped him in his art work. He is also survived by his four children: a son, Daryl Poulin, and his wife, Debbie, of Wyoming, and three daughters, Cynthia Goodale and her husband, John, of Kentucky, Denise Marie Poulin of Virginia, and Candace Kimball and her husband, Kevin, of Dresden; grandchildren: Nicholas Kimball, Mallory K. Reilly, Shane Johnson, David Tschirpre, Erin Brooks, Sasha Poulin; and a great-granddaughter, Alexis Kimball; his friend and former wife, Gabrielle Poulin, of Augusta; and his sister-in-law, Claire Poulin, of Augusta.

Mr. Poulin was a peace-loving man and had a wonderful and unpredictable sense of humor. He would also want us to remember his special friend, Newell Perkins, whom he has known since 1940, when they both worked at Togus.

The family would like to thank the nurses, nurses' aides and doctors at MaineGeneral Medical Center for their loving care given to Mr. Poulin, it was so appreciated.

At his request, there will be no hours of visitation. A memorial service will be conducted at the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta, on Wednesday, May 4, at 9 a.m., with full military honors.

To my Godfather, I'm saddened by your passing and will miss our times talking over coffee. You were a very good artist, I still have that picture you drew in New Guinea with my Dad, Bagley, and you. You've passed your talents to your son and in some ways me. Thank you for a lifetime of laughs and fun. When we get together in the afterlife I want you to make the salad. Rest in Peace, Emile.
