Mabel Stevenson Obituary

NEWPORT -- Mabel Ervin (Gould) Stevenson, 90, left Wednesday, April 27, 2011, to join her beloved late husband, Kenneth P. Stevenson, where he lives with their Lord. Mabel was born in Newport, Feb. 27, 1921, the daughter of Charles H. and Janette (McKeen) Gould. Mabel graduated salutatorian of Newport High School, class of 1938. Mabel was the longest living member of the High Street Congregational Church. She first sang in the High Street Church choir in 1932 at age 11 and was still singing in the choir as late as 2009, 77 years later.

Mabel graduated from Burdette College of Boston. She became the gold medal winner, symbolic of the highest rank in her class. She completed the two-year course in just one year. Mabel was a bookkeeper first with businesses in Boston and later Bangor. When she and her family returned to Newport in 1957, and she soon became the office manager of H. P. Hood & Sons.

During these times, she married Arthur M. Roundy of Bangor and later of Newport. They had five children. Mabel purchased the Log Cabin Diner in 1967, which she operated for the next 10 years. Arthur passed away in 1972. She married Kenneth P. Stevenson in 1974. In 1977, she retired from the restaurant business, which was purchased and operated by her eldest son, David E. Roundy. Mabel and Kenneth became active square dancers, traveling through all 49 continental states, dancing at events throughout the country. They also traveled and danced abroad in Europe, Mexico, Panama and South America.

Mabel was predeceased by husbands, Arthur M. Roundy, in 1972, and Kenneth P. Stevenson, in 1996; and by a step-grandson, Michael Stevenson. She leaves five children and two step-sons: David E. Roundy and wife Jan of St. Albans, Charles G. Roundy of Palmyra, Maurice A. Roundy and wife Jane Therberge of North Lauderdale, Fla., Eve Mishou of Coventry, Vt., Elizabeth Higgins and husband Jeffrey of Corinth, Robert E. Stevenson and wife Yovanne of Bangor, and Bernard P. Stevenson and wife Joanna of Bar Harbor; 18 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Mabel's family wants to acknowledge the kindness and excellent care she received for several months during 2010 from seven special ladies who provided her with home health care. Special appreciation is also expressed for the wonderful staff and management of Emelio Estates in West Corinth, where Mabel spent her last seven months.

Family and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 30, 2011, at Brown Funeral Home, 34 High St., Newport, that has been entrusted with the care of arrangements. A celebration to honor Mabel's life will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, May 1, 2011, at High Street Congregational Church, 24 High St., Newport, with the Rev. Ernest Campbell Pastor and former Pastor Albert Worden officiating. Burial will occur Monday at the Gould-Roundy-Stevenson family lot, Riverside Cemetery, Newport. Friends who wish may send flowers or make memorial donations to High Street Congregational Church Memorial Fund, 24 High St., Newport, ME 04953.

Mom,
I am sorry for your loss. I am praying for you and the whole family. I will always remember sitting at her organ trying to play....and trying not to squirm on that itchy stool! I also remember her and Grandpa taking me square dancing on my birthday. I was so impressed by that big, fluffy skirt! And who can forget the cribbage games?!

It was a pleasure to get to know Mabel while she was at Emilio Estates. I also got to know her wonderful cat Baily he brings a lot of pleasure to all the residents. She will be truly missed by all who got to know a very wonderful lady . God Bless all of her family.

Although I only knew Mabel for a few short years, the light inside her brightened my heart. She was an amazing person and lived a wonderful full life and achieved so much. It was an absoloute pleasure sharing part of her life. My love and sympathies to the family.
