Sandra Linkletter Obituary

ATHENS -- Sandra A. Linkletter, 62, of Athens, went home to be with her Lord, Oct. 3, 2010, after a long and courageous battle with multiple myeloma.

Sandra was born Jan. 24, 1948, in Skowhegan, to Charles and Annette (Staples) Cook. She graduated from Somerset Academy in Athens in 1966, where she met her husband Richard.

She attended business school in Skowhegan. She later worked at the family sawmill, and she was the town clerk for Athens for many years. She sold real estate for Whittemore/Century 21 and was a secretary at Linkletter & Sons for several years.

Sandra was a member of the Church of the Open Bible in Athens, where she was involved with several ladies' ministries. She also served on the Missions Committee and helped establish the Scholarship Committee.

She enjoyed spending time at the camp on Embden Pond with her family and friends, especially her 13 grandchildren. She loved going to Florida every spring with her family. She enjoyed hosting church family fun day and baptismal at their camp on Embden Pond.

Sandra will be dearly missed especially by her husband of 41 years, Richard of Athens; stepmother, Helen Cook of Waterville; sister Susan Cook of Bass Harbor; aunt Thelma Staples of Skowhegan; son Scot and his wife, Helen; son Alan and his wife, Kate; son Michael and his wife, Julie; and daughter Jean and her husband, Cory, all of Athens; and her 13 grandchildren: Mark, Mona, Zachary, John, Elijah, Joshua, Seth, Sara, Isaac, Melody, Megan, Ethan and Jacob. She is also survived by her father-in-law Gordon and mother in-law Melba Linkletter; brother in-law Bruce and his wife Sandy; brother in-law Robert and his wife Debra; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, a number of cousins, and her church family and friends.

Sandra was predeceased by her parents and an aunt, Dorothy Staples, formerly of Santa Rosa, Calif.; a niece Audra Linkletter and a nephew Ryan Linkletter.

Viewing hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7, at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan. A funeral service will be at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 8, at the Athens Elementary School, Fox Hill Road, Athens, with burial to follow at the Mount Rest Cemetery in Athens, with the Rev. Richard Haynie officiating.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to her friends who were diligent in making sure she got to and from her doctor's appointments and the Olive Garden.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan.

Donations may be made in her memory to the Church of the Open Bible Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 88, Athens, ME 04912.

Dear Richard
I have many fond memories of Sandra and am so grateful for the visits you made to California to spend some time with David and me.

Now, my favorite memory shows Sandra's spunk and sense of fun. For our tourist day in San Francisco, Sandra and I wore wigs because we were bald from our chemo treatments. I wore pink and she wore red or maybe it was the other way around. Anyway, the one place she really wanted to visit was Alcatraz and we dashed to get there in time for the last tour boat. DARN! the sign said Sold Out! I told Sandra,"act sick" and we ditched you men and went to the ticket window (in our wigs) and we pleaded our case. (even lifting the wigs to show our bald heads) Yes, we got on the last boat and found the tour of Alcatraz to be just exactly what we hoped it would be. Interesting and Fun!

Sandra lives for me as a woman devoted to her family, devoted to living the best life, and a woman with a lively sense of fun.

You were so blessed to have her as your partner in life and she to have you. And we are all so blessed to have had her touch our lives in many ways.

Her light shines in all who love her. She will be missed every day but she lives in our hearts forever.

love to you always

Richard & Linkletter family,

Bertha Gay just told me that there was something that she had to tell me. Someone from Maine had called her to tell her of Sandra's promotion to heaven. They knew how much Sandra had helped me as a friend, in teaching me Real Estate at Whittermores and how she has inspired me in my battle with leukemia. Anyone that was ever fortunate enough to come in contact with her knew going away that it was always about others, never her.
Richard, I'm so glad that she's HOME, no more suffering, and you and yours will remain in my prayers.
Earth's loss was heaven's gain. Sandra, we all loved, respected and appreciated your kindness, leadership and Christian walk.

Because He lives,

Leonard Whitman

Dear Richard,Scot,Al,Mike,Jean and families,
So many tears have been shed and so many more yet to come but through it all the faith all of you have will see you through. Sandra was not only my sister in law but a friend and the best Aunt to my children. April spent more time with her in the last few years as Sandra was in and out of Maine General. They shared many talks about the days of all the cousins growing up together in and out of each others homes, as well as health issues. These times were precious to her. No words can express how much she will be missed at every family gathering. She always was the heart and soul of the family. I miss you Sandra and love you more then I ever told you but I know we had a silent understanding going back to our days of dating two handsome brothers.
Sending all my love and prayers to each of you every day.

Words can't express how sorry I am Richard and Family. Sandra wore many hats, she was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and the list could go on. The last time I saw her was having lunch in the Olive Garden and we talked about the kids and all her grandchildren. I saw her face light up as she shared stories about them with me. I hope she is now sharing those same stories with Ryan and Audra. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
