She became an avid duplicate bridge player, winning the Maine State Championship in 1974. She was the tournament coordinator for the Maine State Bridge Association (1975-1976) and the 54th Life Master of the American Contract Bridge League in the State of Maine in 1980.
She worked for Mechanical Services and retired from Merrill Lynch in 2000.
Alberta loved to travel, visit presidential museums, and take bus trips with the Senior Centers of Cumberland and Falmouth. She was an avid reader, belonging to book clubs for many years, enjoyed playing dominos, and was treasurer for the Cumberland Historical Society.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Nelson, of Cumberland; her children, Valerie Morton and husband, Robb, of East Longmeadow, Mass.; Denton Haynes of Cumberland; Lincoln Haynes and wife, Cindy, of Byron, Ill.; and Holly Day and husband, Thaddeus, of North Yarmouth; her grandchildren, Sarah Morton of Bentonville, Ariz.; Rebecca (Morton) Ahmed and her husband, Alexander, of Maynard, Mass.; Orion Haynes, of Portland; Victoria Haynes, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Katelyn and Lauren Grobe, of Byron, Ill.; Alexandra Day, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; Mitchell Day, of Abilene, Texas; and Madelyn Day, of North Yarmouth; and her great-grandchildren, Finley Ahmed and Claire Ahmed of Maynard, Mass.

The Cumberland Historical Society very much appreciated Alberta and Nelson's devotion to our group, and Alberta's precise bookkeeping with the treasury. We all wish that her last years could been a little kinder to this sweet lady, but she maintained her love for life and for all her family and friends in spite of it. She always kept a smile on that beautiful dimpled face.
Rest in peace,
George and Carolyn Small

Even though "Berta" and I didn't meet until or junior year at NYA, we immediately hit it off (both being an only child. We were each other's surrogate sibling. We, with our hubbies, maintained a precious friendship over the years. The last time we were together was in October of '06 at the occasion of my husband's burial in Westbrook. I've so missed our visits and am deeply saddened at her "departure"...... Much love & sympathy to Nelson and "the kids" .... LOVE YA ALL!

I was teaching 4th grade in Portland In 1966-8.In another 4th grade class was Valerie Haynes Morton. When I told the kids I was moving to a house on Harris Rd in Cumberland, Maine, Valerie said she was too!! Did I believe it....no, but within a couple of years they were my neighbors across the street!!! Thus began a nearly 40 plus year friendship. Lots of coffees in the early years as my kid played with Holly and other neighborhood kids. We all went to work full time for a number of years and then in retirement Alberta and I took many walks together. I so enjoyed our conversations in those days. She even got me on some of those" senior" trips before I was even retired!! She was such a good friend to me. I sadly read this account of a life well lived.....we will miss her!!
