WARREN HUGHES Obituary

HUGHES, Warren Percy of Glen Allen, Va., passed away July 31, 2013. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. to William Percy and Elenora Warren Hughes. Warren attended Pratt Institute in the evening and earned his certificate in Tool and Die Making design while working for Sperry Gyroscope Co. After serving his country in the Korean War, he went back to night school at Hofstra College, N.Y. and Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y. Upon graduation from BPI, he received his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree in 1961. Warren joined the American Machine & Foundry (AMF) Company in September 1957 as a designer of automatic machinery for the Tobacco Machinery Division. When AMF moved its operations to Richmond in 1964, he became the assistant director of Engineering. He joined the AMF Apparel Equipment Division as assistant director of Engineering when the Tobacco Engineering Division was moved to Italy. In 1985, Warren was appointed to the position of Director of Engineering for the Bakery Machinery Division. It is from this position that he retired in January 1991. He was preceded in death by stepson, Gregory Alker. He is survived by his loving wife since 1979, Elizabeth Bryant Hughes; sister, Doris Fredericks of Peachtree City, Ga.; son, Thomas Warren Hughes and his wife, Linda of Holly Springs, N.C.; two daughters, Carole Euting and her husband, Lee of Buffalo Junction, Va. and Lisa Pearce of Mechanicsville, Va.; five grandchildren, Joshua, Brendon and Alexandra Hughes, Courtney and Kyle Pearce, and Summer Alker of Kill Devil Hills, N.C. A Celebration and Remembrance Service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, August 8 at the Trinity United Methodist Church, 903 Forest Ave., Richmond Va. A reception will follow in the Trinity Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.
