Ann Morrill Obituary

Ann Wakefield Morrill, 53
PORTLAND -- Ann Wakefield Morrill, 53, died on Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010, after a courageous 18- month battle with brain and lung cancer and a few weeks short of her 54 birthday. Ann, like the flowers she loved, has curled up her leaves and has returned back to her earth.
Born in Portland, Ann was the youngest child of the late Mildred A. and William C. Morrill Jr. She attended local Portland schools and graduated from Deering High School in 1975. She continued her education at the University of Maine at Farmington graduating in 1980, where she began a lifelong friendship with roommates, Bonnie and Leilani.
Earning her B.S. in elementary education, Ann went on to teach as a migrant teacher then as a first grade teacher at Gilbert School in Augusta. She shared her joy and laughter and love of learning with each class, embracing them all. Her next stint of teaching was grade two at Farrington School also teaching summer school for children needing a bit more of an opportunity to learn.
Seven years ago, Ann retired back to Portland and began to share her love of gardening and her decorating talents with Peter. As their home began to reflect their personalities, so did their immaculate and extensive gardens. Days and oftentimes weeks would be spent in finding that just so perfect addition to the perennial beds. Their yard is an oasis in a busy world and one where they both took respite, enjoying their birds and each other's companionship.
Ann also loved the ocean, and was always traveling out to Higgins Beach and later to Pemaquid to spend time with friends and family. Another favorite place for her to visit was her family's cottage on Sebago Lake. A recent trip to Europe with Peters' mom, Betty, and her family was an experience that brought her great joy.

Ann loved life. She cherished the little things in life, like deadheading her flowers, making small bouquets throughout her home and listening to the birds. She and Peter loved music and were both seen dancing this summer at the Nateva concert. Their lives together were simple and loving.
Besides her companion, Peter Davidson, Ann is survived by her brothers, Tom and his wife Leslie, and Jon and his wife Holly. She was much loved by her niece, Jesse and her son Presley, and her nephews, Nicholas and his wife Dorian, Ben and his partner Vienna, and Deven and his wife Melissa. Many friends including Leilani and daughter Leifa, and Peter's family, who loved her as their own: Betty, Gretchen, Rob and Bonnie and their families also survive her.
The family would like to extend their gratefulness to Dr. Devin Evans and his gentle compassionate manner with Ann and her family. Thanks are also extended to the Gibson Wing at Maine Medical Center and the Gosnell Hospice House where she spent her last days surrounded by love and comfort.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 22, 2010, at Woodfords Congregational Church, 202 Woodford St., Portland. Arrangements are being handled by the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. Hi Ann, you have been gone so long. I still miss your calls. I wish we could have been closer. We were both gardiners. We spoke the same language. I miss you, your sense of humor and your spirit. Love Cherry.

Ann was a wonderful, giving person who believed in all the children she taught. I was fortunate to work with her at Gilbert School in Augusta. She touched the lives of many children, including my daughter Carrie. Our sympathy to family and friends.

Deepest sympathies to Ann's friends and family. I remember Ann as an elementary school classmate. We sat near each other in class and frequently "lined up" next to each other (seems everything was done alphabetically back then). I remember a cute and kind little girl with a big smile. Reading about her now it's good to know that she grew up to have a positive impact on others; that she discovered things and people that she loved; that she made a difference. It's sad that you're gone Ann Morrill. Rest now.

Ann was one of the strongest people we knew while trying to turn over every rock to beat cancer. She never complained and kept a positive attitude while fighting her battle to live a normal life. Ann was not only the best sister anyone could image, she was truly a friend and inspiration.

I was fortunate enough to have met and known Annie. It was sad to see the obituary today...my best wishes to her friends and family. She was good "people".....good people are few and far between ! But she was one and I obviously don't need to tell those closest to her what a loss it is.
Seems like we have all lost loved ones to cancer...it sucks,

Ms.Morrill was my first grade teacher at gilbert, she was one of my favorite teachers and I always remember how much I absoulty loved being in her class. As I grew older we always kept in touch by sending letters to eachother after she moved to portland. After a few years past we lost contact, I'm a junior now but I still have the big stuffed animals she gave me and many, many letters sent throughout the years. She was such a sweet person and will truly be missed by so many people. As she was loved dearly by my family and many others, may our thoughts and prayers be with all the family and friends.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Ann's passing. I had met Ann on several occasions through Peter and our mutual work at The UPS Stores. She and Peter shared something people only wish for -a kindred spirit that will continue to live on. My sympathies go out to both Peter and all of thier extended families.

I had never met Ann but worked with Peter for over a year. By knowing what a fine person Peter is, I can imagine that Ann was just as wonderful a person. I am saddened by the death but hope that she finds eternal peace. My thoughts and prayers go out to her friends and family. Gary Marceau
