Charles Cyr Obituary

Charles W. Cyr Jr., 89
TOPSHAM - Charles W. Cyr Jr. ("Charlie"), of Topsham, was born in Augusta, on May 24, 1927.
He passed away on May 17, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of Charles W. and Sara K. Cyr.
He graduated from St. Mary's parochial school and Cony High School in Augusta. He was also a graduate of Maine Maritime Academy in Castine; Wentworth Institute in Boston, Massachusetts; and the University of Maine, Orono.
He married Elizabeth L. Doucette ("Bette") in 1952. Shortly there-after, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was engineering officer on the destroyer USS Eaton DDE 510. The Eaton was part of the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea during the Korean War. The ship's home port was Norfolk, Virginia.
Upon discharge from the Navy, he returned to Maine and attended the University of Maine, graduating in the Class of 1958. He was a naval reservist for 20 years, a member of the Military Officers Association of America, and The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers.
He went to work for Bethlehem Steel Shipyard in Quincy, Mass. After the shipyard was sold, he was employed by the Hyde Windlass Co., a subsidiary of Bath Iron Works, in Bath. He was then employed at Holmes Distributors and The House of Lights in Portland, as general manager and later as vice president of the contractor's division. He retired in 1991.
Charlie was a communicant of St. Bartholomew Church in Cape Elizabeth, where he was a member of the choir for several years. After moving to Topsham, he became a member of St. Charles Borromeo Church in Brunswick. He was a volunteer for the Ronald McDonald House for several years.
From the age of 11, when he caddied at the Augusta, Maine, Country Club, he was a life-long golfer. He was a member of the Augusta Country Club, the Bath Country Club, and the Purpoodock Golf Club.
Charlie is survived by his beloved wife, Bette; his sister, Mary Jane Forte, of Center Conway, N.H.; his daughter, Martha LeGrow, and her husband Robert LeGrow, of North Andover, Mass., and their two children, Christopher and Devon LeGrow; son C. Thomas Cyr, and his wife Patricia Cyr, of Roscoe, Ill., and their three children, Lauren, Andrew and Matthew Cyr; daughter Sara Cyr, of Brunswick, and her two children, Hannah and Brendan Glavin; son James and his wife Sybille, of Brunswick, and his three children, Jameson, Harrison and Jackson Cyr; and sister-in-law Suzanne Linton, and her husband Roger, of Pittston.
The entire Cyr family would like to express their deep appreciation for the dignified, professional and compassionate care provided by CHANS Home Healthcare and Hospice.
A memorial Mass followed by a reception will be held Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Brunswick, at 11 a.m. To share memories and condolences with the family, please go to: www.athutchins.com.

Lifting you all in prayer. I have such fond memories of Uncle Charlie. What a special man...a rare gem. The twinkle in his eyes, zest for life, the amazing wit, the compassion and service to others are just a tiny handful of things that made him so special. May you find comfort in the countless beautiful memories and may you have peace from the loving bond you all share.
