CROTON ON HUDSON, N.Y. -- Charlie Flaherty, a long-time resident of South Portland and Cape Elizabeth, and more recently Croton on Hudson, N.Y., passed away after a brief illness on Dec. 16, 2011, surrounded by his family at home.
Charlie lived in New York near his son's family for the past 10 years and had previously lived for 79 years in Maine.
Born on Nov. 23, 1922 in Portland, Charlie was the son of Irene and Mark Flaherty. He graduated from South Portland High School in 1940, served in Pearl Harbor and the South Pacific in World War II and graduated from Northeastern Business College in 1954. He continued his affiliation with the military during his long career as a supervisor at the Armed Forces Entrance Station in Portland while raising his family in Cape Elizabeth.
Charlie was predeceased in 2004 by his beloved wife of 52 years, Rose (Morin) Flaherty. Charlie is survived by his daughter, Janice Flaherty Muller of Chino Hills, Calif., son Robert Flaherty, daughter-in-law Tammy Flaherty; and grandchildren, Ryan and Erin Flaherty and Addision Muller.
Following a service in Croton on Hudson, interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland.
