Doris Burnie Obituary

Doris Bertie Campbell Burnie
FREEPORT -- Doris Bertie Campbell Burnie died on Oct. 2, 2013 at Mercy Hospital. Doris was born on Sept. 11, 1923, the daughter of Joseph and Geneva Campbell in Bancroft; the sixth of thirteen children in her family.
She dedicated many hours in childhood diligently working on the family farm along with her siblings, milking cows and raising hay. Her family had a hearty rural life without running water or electricity. When WWII broke, Doris answered the call to help her country and moved to Portland at age 17 to begin work retreading tires, even before she was old enough to hold a job. Eventually she became a true 'Rosie the Riveter' as she gained employment as a welder on Liberty Ships until the end of the war. Devoted to her family, Doris sacrificed to send her wages home to her parents to help support her family farm. Doris married Fred Burnie on 26 April 1941 and together they settled in South Portland where they raised their three children. As their children grew she continued her strong work ethic employed as a waitress at the Splendid Restaurant, and at Fairchild, finally retiring from Commercial Distributors in 1983.
In her retirement she moved to Freeport Place where she soon became affectionately known as 'Madame President.' There she enjoyed volunteer work, spending cherished time with family and friends and cheering on her beloved favorite team, the Red Sox.
Doris is survived by her three children Charles Burnie and his wife Cathy, Linda Burnie and her husband Manny and Josephine Campbell. Two brothers Blaine Campbell and and this wife Joan, Phil Campbell, three sisters Freda Oilver, Mary Gozelski and Glenna Brewer; sister-in laws Lois Campbell and Atla Campbell; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Doris was predeceased by her husband Fred, brothers Russell, Lee, Al and Reginal Campbell and sisters Sis, Thelma and Joanne, and with great sadness to her, a beloved granddaughter, Stacie Ann.
An hour of visitation will be held from 12-1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11, 2013 at Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal Street, Brunswick, immediately followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with Reverend Ron McLaughlin officiating.

I love and will miss my Aunt Dot who I always affectionately called just 'Auntie'. She was a woman that I admired for her strong presence and convictions. You never had to try and guess how Auntie felt or thought about anything.. She will be truly missed.
