Eugene Stone Obituary

Eugene G. Stone, 81
SCARBOROUGH - Eugene G. Stone, 81, passed away on Dec. 27, 2016, at The Gosnell Memorial Hospice House with his family by his side. Eugene was born in West Paris, Maine, the son of Henry Swift Stone and Gerftrude Perham Stone, brother to Franklin P. Stone.
He attended West Paris High School and graduated from Kents Hill High School in 1953. His family spent summers at the farm on Stearns Hill, which burned when he was in high school; this property later became known fondly to Gene's family as "the tree farm".
During his high school years he was an Eagle Scout, played Clarinet in the high school band and was the town's paper carrier for as many as 10 years. Gene was never afraid of hard work.
Gene graduated from Portland University in 1959 with a B.S. in Business Administration. While attending Portland U. he attended a public speaking class at the YMCA which he recalled as a pivotal learning experience - it helped give him the confidence and ability to excel in business.
Gene served in the Army Reserves during the Berlin Crisis.
Eugene began his banking career as a teller at Portland Savings Bank in Portland, which later became People's Heritage Bank and TD Bank, working for Shirley Irish and Lyman Cousens. During the early days of his career, in addition to becoming a new husband and father, he attended graduate school at Brown University. Although Gene put in long hours at work and had to study many hours each evening, he first made time to play with his baby daughter, being a loving playful parent was always a priority, and he did it well.
On July 10, 1982, he married Jacqueline Bouchard Cyr and became the stepfather to three girls, Lori, Kimberly, and Renee. In 1985 when their children were grown, Jackie and Gene moved to Fall River, Mass., where Gene took a position as the VP of Branch Administration and Marketing at Citizens Union Savings Bank. In 1988 he accepted the position he was most proud of - he became President of Medway Savings Bank in Medway, Mass. He helped the bank grow from two locations to 10 - from a $50 million bank to a $300 million bank. He instituted 911 call buttons on the ATMS for the safety of his customers. To promote growth and reflect their expanding market, he changed the name of the bank to Strata Bank. He was active in the Rotary and Lions Clubs throughout his career in Maine and Massachusetts. Being the President of a bank was Gene's dream and with the help, hard work and dedication of his wife Jackie, he was able to realize that dream. He retired as President of Strata Bank in early 2001.
Gene was a hard-working, honest, trustworthy, genuinely positive person who was loved by many and will be greatly missed. Over his lifetime he shared much camaraderie and laughter with extended family member, great friends and co-workers; time spent at Moosehead Lake, boating on Sebago Lake, hunting in the North Woods and many other special occasions.
Eugene is survived by his wife of 34 yrs., Jackie; daughter Pam Gaudet, her husband John and their son John Austin, Lori Baillargeon and her sons, Nicholas and Alex, Kimberly Cyr and son Austin, Renee and Matthew Harriman and their children, Ashley and Joshua. Gene will also be missed by Jackie's extended family, his first wife Bette, the extended Packard family, and his good friends, Bob and Janet Skillin.
Per his wishes, there will be no services. To share memories and condolences with the family, please go to www.athutchins.com.

I worked for Gene for several years starting in 1965 at Portland Savings Bank. He was always fair and reasonable. Gene was a friend to all and will be sadly missed by many.
