Eulah Steen Rand, 89
ALFRED -- Eulah S. Rand, 89, a longtime resident of Alfred, died peacefully at the Newton Center in Sanford on Monday, April 25, 2011.
She was born in Island Falls, on Feb. 23, 1922, the daughter of Dale and Luvie (Downing) and grew up in Houlton, attended local schools and graduated from Houlton High School in 1939.
Eulah became a teacher and in 1942 she finished three years at Presque Isle Normal School and taught one year in Limestone elementary. As her professional life brought new adventures and teaching opportunities, she moved to Orono and taught fifth grade for six years and received a bachelor's degree from the University of Maine in 1948.
Eulah married George Rand in 1949 and they moved to Alfred in 1962. She continued to teach in Alfred and retired from Sanford following 30 years teaching children not only the basics academically, but she nurtured and encouraged the kids to dream; and that they could do anything they wanted in life. She had high standards, but she was fair and always treated her students as she would like to be treated; with respect and decorum. She was an independent and classic woman.
Mrs. Rand had a great faith and love of God, and was a serving member of the Alfred Parish Church. For many years she loved participating in the story hour at the library. She also enjoyed playing cards and games with her many and dear friends. She was hard to beat!
An avid walker, she walked to the post office most days and visited along the way with her friends and neighbors.
First and foremost was her family and gathering for Sunday dinners and she enjoyed being together during the holidays. Her grandchildren remember playing Scrabble with her and being taught to send handwritten thank you notes. Many of the values and words of wisdom she taught them are becoming family traditions as they raise their families.
Eulah will be dearly missed and her spirit of togetherness of family will continue in her memory and honor.
She is survived by her son, George Rand Jr. and wife Joan; two granddaughters, Amanda Bradish and husband Jamie, and Raelynn Rand and companion Stan Moore; six great-grandchildren, Hannah, Grace, Elizabeth and Henry Bradish, and Brycen Wolfhart and Kameron Grondin; one brother, Vaughn Steen of California, one sister, Muriel Briner and husband Andrew of Hickory, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, George Rand in 1978.
A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Alfred in the month of May. Her service will announced in the local papers and can be found on our website at Autumn Green. To leave a message of condolence for the family, please visit
