Frederick Birdsall Obituary

Frederick (Fred)
Robert Birdsall
KITTERY -- Frederick (Fred) Robert Birdsall passed away on Feb. 24, 2011, at Durgin Pines Nursing Center in Kittery.
Fred was born on Sept. 1, 1927, and was raised in Hillsgrove, Pa. During WWII Fred served in the U.S. Army in Frankfurt, Germany. After his tour of duty Fred began his career as an engineer, working for Ingersol Rand, Bendix and DuPont.
At Bendix, Fred met his first love, Barbara, whom he later married in 1951. He created a number of patented brake system designs. At age 62 he retired from DuPont and moved to Homosassa, Fla. Fred and Barbara were members of the Brooksville Wesleyan Church where Fred served as head usher. He also worked as the Business Manager of the Wesleyan Village. Fred drove routinely for his neighborhood crime watch program.
In 1997 Fred's wife, Barbara, died unexpectedly. The following year Fred married a long-time family friend, Wanda Mason. In late 2006 they moved to Wells.
In 2009 Fred and Wanda moved to a beautiful retirement facility, Kittery Estates, in Kittery. They were members of the Ogunquit Baptist Church and recently attended Eliot Baptist Church.
In January 2011, after battling multiple myeloma cancer since 2007, Fred struggled with kidney failure and other complications, before succumbing to a peaceful end of his long life.
Survivors include Wanda (Mason) Birdsall; his children, Robert and Mark Birdsall of Houston, Texas, Sharon Birdsall Mock of Jupiter, Fla., David Birdsall of Atlanta, Ga., and John Birdsall of Hollywood, Fla., two stepchildren, Paul Mason of Flemington, N.J., and Wendy Ferns of Wells; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place at Kittery Estates on Wednesday, March 2, at 10:30 a.m., with additional services and interment to follow in Florida. Arrangements are in care of Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Rd., P.O. Box 910, Wells. www.bibberfuneral.com.
