Joseph Lapointe Obituary

Joseph G. Lapointe, 77
CAPE ELIZABETH - Joseph "Jerry" Lapointe died peacefully on Oct. 21, 2017, after a long illness. He was 77.
Jerry was a lifelong educa-tor and lover of literature and learning. He taught middle school and high school in Rockland, East Millinocket and Portland, rounding out his career as an eighth grade English teacher at Lincoln Middle School. Even after he retired, he remained in the classroom for several more years as a teacher's aide at St. Brigid's School in Portland. He was also a lifelong tennis player and dedicated high school coach.
Jerry loved dancing with his wife, playing cards, ice skating, cross-country skiing, long beach walks, ocean cruises, and traveling. Those who knew him will remember his love of people, his ready laugh, his beautiful singing voice, and his devotion to family. He leaves behind a large community of family and friends who will miss him dearly.
He is survived by his wife Kathy Lapointe; his son Michael LaPointe; his daughter Ellen LaPointe; stepsons Kevin Michaud, David Michaud, and Michael Michaud (deceased); grandchildren Hailey LaPointe, Aiden LaPointe, Julian Hathaway-LaPointe, Jessica Michaud, Dalisha Laboy, Najah Royal-Hall, and Douglas and Derrick Michaud; daughters-in-law Katie LaPointe, Jen Cross, and Cathy Michaud; brothers John and Thomas Lapointe; and sisters Constance LaPointe and Teresa Lessard.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to the team at Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough for their wonderful care in Jerry's last weeks of life.

I am just finding this obituary now in 2021 after making a new friend who also attended Lincoln Middle school a few years after me. We were talking about our favorite teachers. Mr. Lapointe was one of mine. I always remember watching him in the annual talent show breaking out his Jitterbug dance moves, and loved the care he showed his students. I remember on my last day of 8th grade being so sad to leave him and his class. He was a wonderful teacher and I always think of him fondly. Perhaps my favorite memory was from a few years after last seeing him on that last day of 8th grade... he came into the ice arena where I worked as a skate guard. Portland Ice Arena. See, I was a kid who spent all of my free time training as a figure skater, so imagine my surprise when my favorite middle school teacher gets on the ice and remembers me! We skated around in circles for an hour and a half talking about school and skating. He came back a few more times while I worked there in High School. I never forgot him and getting to chat with him. I was always excited to see him skating and often have wondered over the years if he still skates. I am so sorry to hear of his passing, but I will always hold dear this memory of sharing memories, stories, and skating with him.

I had Mr Lapointe in 8th grade in East Millinocket, and he was also my next door neighbor. My heart-felt condolences to the extended family. He was a great teacher and a wonderful neighbor.

I served in the 243rd EIS, MeANG with Jerry for many years. He was a great mentor to all administrative, information management and training personnel. He was always thoroughly prepared and ready to assist new members.

As principal of Lincoln Middle School, I had the privilege of working with Jerry. As a friend, I played a number of tennis matches against Jerry. Simply put- he was one fantastic guy!!. He was a true professional who really enjoyed teaching English, but more significantly, he enjoyed teaching kids. So sorry to hear of his passing. May he Rest In Peace.

I taught with Jerry at Lincoln Middle School for many years. Most of his conversations with me involved his beloved family and his deep faith in God. He was a good friend and I will miss him.
