Peter Neilson Obituary

Peter W. Neilson Jr., 49

BUENA VISTA, Colo. - It is with great sadness that we announce Peter W. Neilson Jr., 49, died suddenly and unexpectedly on April 10, 2018, in Buena Vista, Colo. He suffered a fatal heart attack shortly after doing what he loved perhaps more than anything else -- riding his dirt bike through the aspen-lined hills of Colorado, alongside one of his best friends.

Born Dec. 11, 1968, in New Haven, Conn., Pete resided in Orange, Conn., until his early 20s. After attending classes at Southern Connecticut University for 3 1/2 years, he visited and fell in love with the mountains of Colorado. Pete soon bought a home in Placer Valley near Alma, Colo., where he carved out a quiet, peaceful lifestyle that would follow him for the rest of his days.

He maintained a strong connection to the East Coast, visiting his family in Maine at least once a year and occasionally detouring to Connecticut to catch up with old friends.

Pete touched countless individuals throughout his life, many of whom met him only once and were deeply moved by his powerful extension of energy.

He carried a demeanor which spread like wildfire to all who knew him, as if to say, "Relax -- we only have so much time to enjoy this life." A talented painter, he built a successful contracting business from the ground up and took great pride in providing clients with quality work for over 30 years.

Pete was a born empath and was truly devoted to his mother, who -- although he lived 2,150 miles away -- he spoke to on the phone at least once a day (sometimes twice).

Though his life was tragically cut short, Pete lived more than most people who make it to 90. He took great pleasure in spending time outdoors, whether fishing the jagged and unyielding Maine coast, exploring abandoned silver mines near his home, or hiking with his beloved Newfoundland, Gracie.

His thirst for adventure followed him everywhere, framed by a light, jovial presence that made him a true pleasure to be around.

Predeceased by his father, Peter W. Neilson, Pete is survived by his loving mother, Judith; his brother, Erik; his two sisters, Krista and Lorrie; his nephews, Kristophor and Tyler; his niece, Shelby; and his beautiful dog, Gracie. He will be missed endlessly throughout time by his family, countless friends and all others who were touched by his company.

Visiting hours will be held 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Saturday, May 5, at Hobbs Funeral Home in South Portland, followed by a funeral Mass at 1 p.m., at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Cape Elizabeth. A reception for family and friends will be held at the church after the Mass.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to the American Heart Association

I am deeply saddened to hear of Pete's passing. My Brother Robert and I went to Amity with him. I first met Pete in 7th grade and remained good friends with him all through high school.
