Philip Baker Obituary

Philip Baker, 72
BRISTOL -

Philip Baker, 72, passed away on May 13, 2016. Philip Baker, a wonderful caring man, father, grandfather, teacher and friend, left this world due to complications from lung transplantation at Duke University Medical Center. Philip was born on Nov. 26, 1943, in Damariscotta, the son of Philip Baker and Thelma Sproul Baker and the grandson of Roy and Josie Sproul . He grew up in Hatchtown and Sproul Hill Road in Bristol. He graduated from Bristol High School and Maine Central Institute. He received a BA from William Penn Univ. where he was a member of Sigma Delta Pi/Tek fraternity. He received his MA from University of Southern Maine. Philip served the students of Kennebunk Schools for 32 yrs. His interests included sailing, scuba diving, and the eight special trips sailing to the Bahamas on "Chanticleer" and land cruising by Airstream. He was an avid animal lover. Phil is survived by his life partner of 20 years, Deborah Plamondon and their fur babies, Kira, Emma, and Acadia; his daughter Amy Baker Cosgriff and her husband Jason, his son Shannon Baker and partner Rebecca Tilton; and grandchildren, Wyatt, Savannah, and Cooper Cosgriff, and Jessica Palmer; his sister Carol Joyal and family and the mother of his children Joyce Patterson. Phil will be sadly missed by so many but we will cherish the footprints he left in our hearts.
Per his wishes he will be cremated and buried at sea. A celebration of life will be held early summer. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the amazing Lung Transplant team at Duke University Medical Center and all the incredible doctors, nurses and therapists that provided compassionate care throughout this endeavor. We also thank the donor who paid it forward by providing the precious gift of a new lung. Phil reciprocated by donating his organs. We would urge everyone to "donate life" by becoming an organ donor.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Phil's memory to:

I just learned of Phil's passing. I taught with him at Consolidated and KHS over the years. He was a superb and beloved educator. My son remembers him as one of his all-time favorite teachers - Phil treated all his students with great respect and his positive energy, wonderful sense of humor, and zest of life made the world a brighter more hopeful place for many a disillusioned teenager. What a marvelous man. He truly left this world a better place. He is on to his next adventure.
