PORTLAND -- Thomas Lee MacMillan, 82, passed away on Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, at his home in Portland.
He was born in Portland on March 5, 1929, the son of George A. and Rose (Phillips) MacMillan.
Thomas was a lifelong resident of Portland and during his retirement he had resided in Leesburg, Fla., before returning to Portland.
He was a graduate of Portland High School where he was Class Vice President, class of 1947. Thomas was an avid sportsman all of his life. While at Portland High School he lettered in baseball, football and track. He was Co-Captain of the football and baseball teams.
Mr. MacMillan served with the United States Army and played baseball in the Carolina Leagues. After his honorable discharge from the Army he was drafted by the Boston Braves Organization, playing in Appleton, Wis., and Harlan, Ky. After his return to Portland he played in the Twilight League.
He later found his true passion which was golfing. He played professional golf in the 1960s and had won numerous amateur tournaments. He was a longtime member of Riverside Golf Club.
Thomas was predeceased by his parents, George and Rose MacMillan; a son, Daniel Lee MacMillan; three brothers, Robert, Albert and Kenneth, and two sisters, Ruby Marshall and Myrtle Burnham. He is survived by two sons, William F. MacMillan of Gorham and Peter J. MacMillan of Portland, one daughter, Sandra D. Walsh of Portland; one brother, Roland H. MacMillan of Portland, four sisters, Catherine Ross of Portland, Helen 'Dunie' Conley of Portland, Margaret 'Peggy' Brown of Silverdale Washington and Jean Shea of Philadelphia, Pa.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by his former wife and mother of his children, June 'Coburn' MacMillan.
A time of visitation for friends and relatives will be held on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, from 10 to 11 a.m., at the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland, with the funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
The family wishes to extend their thanks to Peter Thomas of Aging Excellence and to the staff at Hospice of Southern Maine especially to Betty Thompson and Dean Luddington. The family would also like to say a special thank you to Tom's son Peter for caring for Tom during his illness.
