Thomas Sebring Obituary
Thomas H. Sebring, formerly of Paoli Thomas H. Sebring, 88, a retiree from General Electric and noted numismatist, passed away on 26 February. The son of Henry E. and Edna (Farr) Sebring, he was born in Syracuse, New York and graduated from Charlotte High School in Rochester. He received a B.A. in Economics from Columbia University in 1950, where he was a member of the Delta Psi fraternity. After graduation he was drafted to serve the Army in the Korean War. He completed Office Candidate School at Fort Benning and qualified as a jump master before being assigned as a forward observer in a 4.2 inch mortar unit belonging to the 461st Infantry 2nd Chemical Battalion — Heavy Mortar in Korea. His unit received the Presidential Unit Citation for for Bravery for its actions at Outpost Harry on 13 June 1953, where they were engaged in fierce combat with Chinese troops. On returning from the war, he married Patricia Ann Clement in Rochester, New York in June 1954 and received an MBA from the Wharton School of Business in 1955. He spent a long career working for General Electric as a personnel manager, including recruiting engineers for the space program. His work led to residence in the Philadelphia area, Syracuse, and Phoenix. He had many passions, particularly numismatics, and was a member of the American Numismatic Association, the West Chester Coin Club, and the Wilmington Coin Club. He spent his retirement years writing numerous articles and giving presentations on numismatics, particularly coins recovered from shipwrecks. Tom was an active member of his community, belonging to the Paoli-Malvern-Berwyn chapter of Rotary. He was a member of Paoli Presbyterian Church, where he had served as a deacon. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Ann (Clement), daughter Janice Sebring (Blaine McCants), son Timothy (Amy Taylor), and son Thomas Jr. (Janice Hilbert); three grandchildren, Russell and Mary McCants, and Sara Sebring; and many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his brothers Richard, Gerald, and Donald. His ashes will be interred at Paoli Presbyterian Church, 225 S. Valley Road, in Paoli, where a memorial service will be held on Saturday, 11 March at 12:00 noon.
