Dorothy Newbern Haythorne

1926 - 2022

Dorothy Newbern Haythorne passed away from this life into God's loving embrace on December 7th, 2022, at the age of 96.

Born June 5th, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Copeland Newbern and Rebecca (Gallop) Newbern and was the youngest of 4 children.

Survived by her daughters Carol Ann Haythorne and Suzanne Haythorne Strickland and Son-in-Law Don, along with 2 grandchildren Keith Snowden and Hunter Strickland, and one great granddaughter Alaina Snowden.

Preceded in death by husband Keith Haythorne and her son David, and her granddaughter Heather Snowden.

Dorthy was a longtime Gainesville resident, landlord, and real estate owner/investor.

She was born in Currituck County, NC, but left during the depression when her family lost their farm. She then moved to and grew up in Worthington Springs, FL.

She married Keith and moved to Gainesville in the early 50s, where they bought an old farmhouse off 16th Ave. and built apartments behind it. The house still stands in the neighborhood of Haythorne Heights.

They built their home in the Florida Park neighborhood in Gainesville, where all 3 of their children grew up. Her parents then also built a home there that she designed. She loved investing in and designing homes. Her architecture design influenced a local architect, and he along with a local builder built a neighborhood off of Millhopper Road from her design of her home. They named the model home "The Haythorne."

She will be remembered for her love of travel, bridge, gardening and especially real estate ventures. One of her favorite places she traveled to was the Great Wall of China and Tibet.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Gainesville for over 65 years.

Her memorial service will be at a later time.
