John Atkinson Obituary

John Thomas "Tommy" Atkinson, age 68, of Malvern passed away February 26, 2017. He was born May 25, 1948, in Malvern, to the late Thomas P. and Ruth Williams Atkinson. Tommy was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He attended Henderson State University and graduated from Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science. He later took over the family business of Atkinson Funeral Home and later retired from Ouachita River Correctional Unit in Malvern. Tommy enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors and established Clear Creek Farm, a quarter horse breeding and training facility in Malvern. He was president of the Arkansas Quarter Horse Association and on the Board of Directors of the American Quarter Horse Association. After his retirement, in a continuation of a life of service to others, he spent his free time delivering Meals on Wheels to less fortunate families. With his other free time he cherished the opportunities he had to gather driftwood from the creek with his loving daughter, Abbi.
Tommy is survived by his wife, Robbie Holter Atkinson; daughters, Abbi Jon Marie of Malvern and Summer Thornton Baird (Ryan) of Phoenix, AZ; son, Brandon Thornton of Memphis, TN; grandchildren, Olivia and Evelyn Baird of Phoenix, AZ; his sister, Andrea Atkinson Paul (Roger) of Malvern; step-sister, Luanne A. Birch of Malvern; stepbrother, Brady Auld (Sherri) of Royal, AR and stepmother, Nell Atkinson of Malvern.
Visitation will be Wednesday, March 1 from 6:00-8:00pm at Regency Funeral Home.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday, March 2 at 2:00pm at the First United Methodist Church with Reverend LaVon Post officiating. Pallbearers will be Freddie Johnson, David Hedges, Rod Crocker, John Dugan, Haltom Higgs and David Chaffin. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Larry Brashears and Doug Young. Burial will be in Shadowlawn Cemetery. Tommy always had a passion for his family and loved helping out with the United Methodist kids. In lieu of flowers, a memorial can be made to Robbie Atkinson to help in supporting his two loves.
