Longtime Marin resident, Adelaide Margaret McCready, died Monday, October 27, 2003 at the age of 88, at Marin General Hospital following a short illness. A Memorial Service for family and friends will be held in the auditorium at The Redwoods, 40 Camino Alto, Mill Valley on Sunday, November 9, 2003 at 1:30 pm.
Adelaide graduated with honors from UC Berkeley in 1938, and received her Masters in Social Work in 1940. She worked for many years at Traveler's Aid Society in Oakland where she received National Awards for her casework. In 1970, she published a book of poetry and prose entitled "Two Letters to a Peacemaker". In 1995, at 80 years of age, the International Society of Poets nominated her for "Poet of the Year" and her poem was published in the anthology Journey of the Mind in the National Library of Poetry.
Adelaide lived in Marin since 1954, first in Stinson Beach and then Mill Valley from 1961. She had been a resident of The Redwoods since 1990. She loved the arts, especially music, and was a member of the Choral Singers of Marin from 1993 to 1995. Adelaide loved all of nature and the outdoors; mountains, forests, rivers and ocean. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations in Adelaide's name be made to any charity concerned with nature, wildlife or the preservation of environment.

I've known Adelaide since the '50's, when she was my neighbor just down the beach in Stinson Beach. We had a lot of wonderful talks and she helped me through some rough times. She was my best friend.

I met Adelaide about 1990 through my husband, Dick Ferber, who had known her since her Stinson Beach days, and fell in love with her immediately. She was such an interesting, humorous, intelligent, strong woman it was a joy and privilege to know her. I'll always miss her.

I found this quote by Patrick Overton amongst Mother's papers...and would like to share it with you:

"When we walk to the edge of all the light we have and take the step into the darkness of the unknown, we must believe that one of two things will happen. There will be something solid for us to stand on or we will be taught to fly."

Dearest Mother, I love you and miss you...and hope you have found peace. Your loving daughter, Jan

Grandma Adelaide immediately made me feel like one of the family and always made me feel special to be her "newly added" grandaughter. I will forever keep Grandma Adelaide's smile and good humor in my memories. It's fun to hear my husband's stories of the wonderful memories and special times he spent with her as a child in Stinson Beach. She was a genuine, loving, but most of all, powerful woman who will be greatly missed. It will be nice to share Val's childhood memories with her great grandchildren! Rest in Peace Grandma... We love you!
