Arthur Madsen Obituary

Arthur Madsen, Jr.
Passed away peacefully in the Sierra mountains near Yosemite on May 17, 2004.
A third generation Marinite, Art enjoyed photography for the past 50 years. A professional photographer for over 40 years having earned the designation of Master Craftsman from the Professional Photographers of America, Art co-founded the Professional Photographers of the Greater Bay Area when less than six photographers got together in a small San Rafael basement to discuss the importance of professionalism.
He served as President of PPGBA for two years and created the Golden Gate School of Professional Photography which he served as Director for several years. Art shared his photography expertise with anyone interested in learning as that was how he started at only ten years of age.
He owned a photography studio in San Rafael for over 25 years photographing weddings, portraiture and commercial photography, etc. as well as conducting several photographic workshops in Marin, the Bay Area and Yosemite National Park where he met his wife BettyRuth 37 years ago.
Art was a volunteer, judged at the Marin County Fair, was a past member of Rotary, Lyons Club, and collected model Lionel trains and was co-founder of the Cal Stewart Train Meet many years ago when he met a friend for lunch to discuss their interest in model trains.
Art is survived by his wife of 36 years, BettyRuth, his son Arthur III and daughter Erica, his mother Helen, brother Paul and sister Helena.
No funeral service is planned according to Art's wishes. A celebration of his life will be organized for later in the year. Anyone who knew Art is encouraged to send cards and letters to P.O. Box 341, San Anselmo, CA 94979.

I knew Arthur from about 1963 to 1966 when I lived in San Rafael prior to being drafted and never seeing him again. However, his face and memory are as if from yesterday. He was a cheerful fellow and we had fun together. He would come over to my apartment regularly and we would listen to Beach Boy's music and do stuff together. He bought a new blue Chevrolet with a corvette transmission and my friend Pete did an amazing power-shift with it. Pete's gone too. The old times were fun and the years flew by. Art was studying to work in a laboratory but I see he later went into photography. He once invited me to go with him and his family to Yellowstone Park. I see he had a wife and family and what looks like a nice life, so I am happy for him. I remember his smiling face. He was one of my best friends. May he rest in peace.
